just finishing Lear's bio of Rachel Carson...
Really enjoyed "The Sea Around Us", which really put her on the map...giving her more time to write and "quit her day job"...and making the extensive researching and writing of "Silent Spring" possible.
I'm a little frustrated trying to find video clips of her CBS appearance on:
"CBS reports, 'The Silent Spring of Rachel Carson" which appeared on April 3, 1963. with her point-counterpoint juxtapositon with the over-the-top, white coated "scientist" who (well he had a name, but seems poetic to let him remain forgotten!) and who refuted (not so much!) her presentation.
Conversely, she delivered with extreme composure the concerns and facts of "Silent Spring". The episode is hosted with Eric Severeid. and was interrupted for reports from News on "Faith 7" the mercury mission with Gordon Cooper.
but not really finding the full clips, which must be around, and hopefully without buying the video...just want to see more than miniscule clips I've seen so far!
ALSO, would like to find her last speech, "The Pollution of the Environment", in San Francisco, Oct. 18, 1964 at Kaiser Foundation Symposium (at Fairmont).
She was in a wheel chair, but did get to see the Pacific Ocean for the first time, despite deteriorating health.
So today is a glorious Spring day, (don't ask about my drive to the mountains in a blizzard yesterday!--but back in the 60's today) anyway, so let's be thankful to Rachel and all who work to keep the earth alive, healthier and singing.

| Wow, this is so neat! Just this morning I was thinking about Rachel Carson and all of the progress we have made in trying to do the right thing in protecting our living environment, on this one Earth of ours. Sure we have miles to go and more to do, but Rachel was for so many of us, the first glimpse on what we humans do that affects the whole world. Rachel Carson.......a giant...a hero to the planet. |

As a person who has spent decades working to improve the environment of Hawai'i, I, too, consider Rachel Carson to be one of the real heroes of my lifetime.
However, there are others, alive and working today. For those who cannot dedicate their time, a little money can go a long way towards making a difference in the right hands. The two national organizations that have the greatest impact, with the least funding, are the Center for Biological Diversity and Earthjustice.
Earthjustice is a particular favorite of mine, as I worked for many years with the Honolulu office on stream restoration in Waipi'o Valley. They have a strong Hawai'i focus, working on ecosystem protection through legal action, while the Center for Biological Diversity is focused on endangered species in general.
If you really want to honor Rachel Carson's legacy, and don't have the energy to prusue a project of your own, a donation to either of these organizations would be a good way to do it. And if you do donate to Earthjustice, a notation that it is for the Honolulu office, or, even better, Waipi'o Valley Stream Restoration- well, let's just say that I would consider it an excellent choice. |
