Hi all,

Claudia Goddard, Chris Davis, and I are playing music this Monday through Wednesday for Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima. It is going to be a crazy few days, covering lots of territory, performing at prestigious dance venues in three states. Sorry for the late notice. Hope to see some taropatchers!

BTW, Monday (6/17/12) at the Millennium Stage at Kennedy Center will be streamed live at 6 pm. http://www.kennedy-center.org/explorer/live/

Hi Don,

Thanks for your kind words. You were "pretending to work", but I really played hooky!

Here is a link to the show. Please be nice. I personally hate the idea of being video taped.

Andy, you, Claudia and Chris did an awesome job. Your 'ōlelo was spot on.

Claudia Goddard of the Taropatch plays slack key at about 10:31 into this concert as Admin Andy Wang sits on the right:

http://www.kennedy-center.org/explorer/videos/?id=M5067

Andy plays slack with Chris Davis on steel at about 16:30 While Claudia plays rhythm on an ukulele

Claudia plays ukulele with Chris Davis on steel at about 20:10 while Andy plays rhythm guitar

At 23:30 Claudia plays ukulele Chris Davis on steel while Andy plays rhythm guitar. A short break for the dancers to switch to ipu at 26:10 and it starts again.

Claudia plays ukulele with Chris Davis on steel while Andy plays rhythm guitar at 29:10

Claudia plays ukulele with Chris Davis on steel at 33:10 while Andy plays rhythm guitar

Kumu hula Vicky Holt Takamine introduces herself and halau at 38:55 and the musicians leave the stage.

At 56:40 the kumu hula introduces the musicians

There’s also a ton of concerts at http://www.kennedy-center.org/explorer/videos/

Thank you! Here are the songs we did:

10:31 - Ka Manu by Alice Namakelua, as taught to me by Ozzie Kotani
16:30 - Moana Chimes
20:10 - Dancing Under The Stars by Harry Owens
23:30 - A Kona Hema/Ko Ma'i Hōʻeuʻeu
29:10 - Aloha Koʻolau by Alice Namakelua
33:10 - ʻIā ʻOe E Ka Lā

This was an incredible experience for Andy , Chris and me. Working with Kumu Vicky Holt Takamine is such a privilege - what a powerhouse she is! And her dancers, both sets from Hawaiʻi and New York , are so dedicated and such lovely people too. Watch the ancient hula sections too, they are transfixing. At the Kennedy Center, when Kumu and the others played the enormous pahu drums, the entire stage was shaking from the thunderous sounds and her and her son Jeffreyʻs mesmerizing chanting evoked the worlds of their ancestors and legendary figures like Poliahu and Pele. This tour was an adventure we musicians will never forget and we are so grateful to Kumu for the opportunity to accompany her stunning dancers and share the Hawaiian music we all love so much.
