Learn to play Slack Key and Ukulele

Workshops in Slack Key, Steel Guitar, and Ukulele will be held November 10, 2012
Jeff Peterson, Dennis Kamakahi, Nathan Aweau, and Cyril Pahinui, traditional masters of Kiho'alu or slack key guitar and ukulele instruct in the kanikapila style.

Nana ka maka; ho'olohe ka pepeiao -watch with the eyes, and listen with the ears. Thus one learns. This traditional method provides the perfect instruction to this rich tradition. Students of all levels will be guided through simple exercises and solos to create the "slack key" sound.

Slack key can be played on any guitar, acoustic or electric. The term refers to both the musical style and the myriad ways the instrument is tuned. Instructors teach several traditional tunings. In addition, you'll learn the use of vibrato, harmonics, slurs, harmonies in thirds and sixths, legato playing and other musical ideas that have helped create a distinctive guitar sound. This lush finger-picking style will add new sounds and flavors to your entire repertoire.

Workshop sessions will be held at Dusty Strings Music School for $40 per session.

To sign-up please contact:

We've already received our tickets too and are anxiously looking forward to the concert! Mahalo Terry for telling us about it although I did also see Cyril's posting on Facebook. With some very good news after two recent operations plus our 39th anniversary to celebrate, my wife and I decided to make this a family event so we bought six tickets to the event for ourselves, our son and daughter and their spouses. I'll keep my eyes open for you Taropatchers out there!

Aloha,
John A.

From what I'm hearing, a lot of people are getting very excited about the 4th Annual Seattle Slack Key Festval.

Only two weeks to go before Seattle becomes slack key heaven for a weekend.

Aloha, Don!

Yes, good to cross paths again with you and Jean and John. Got to meet John's kids and a grandson.

Thanks to you, too for doing a superb job on a harrowing assignment in the "front of the house"! What's the Hawaiian word for "Bravo"?

Regards.

A huge MAHALO goes to the volunteers who work their assets off to make this event successful for all who attend. Many of them are TP regulars, and they deserve grateful pats on their backs.
