(in response to post by makanaaloha in the "I Lanikai" thread):
This mele was composed by (the late) George Kale`ohi, Sr. of Anahola, Kaua`i. The first recording of it was done by The Torchlighters on the vinyl, "Coco Palms Presents the Torchlighters" -- with the mele simply titled "Wai Ulu".
I called a kupuna friend of mine to ask for clarification about the mele (because she had mentioned years ago, that she had grown up with the Kale`ohi children) and her first comment was "it's just 'Wai Ulu', not 'Awaiaulu'". She went on to say that the recording on the aforementioned vinyl is perhaps the only one with the correct lyrics -- and added "why do folks think it's okay to add and take away lyrics??".
I'll play this vinyl version at the start of my show Thursday (9/27), so anyone who truly want the original lyrics,, can jot them down, 'kay?
