Despite 23 trips to Hawaii, we've never stayed on Oahu. Thinking about taking advantage of $309 Rt from San Diego. SO.. I'm looking for lodging advice for Feb-Mar. Probably prefer winward side, but close enough to Waikiki or downtown to get to music. email me if you don't want to clog up the BB. Thanks

Thumbstruck & I stay Kay's Alii Vacation Rentals in Kailua, 4 blocks off the beach, not fancy, but affordable. Auntie Wanda did not like it because of an ant insfestaion in the 1Br unit a couple of years ago, but they took care of it. http://www.kaysvacation.com/. I also spend all of April and early May there. |

Chunky Send me a pm and I'll give you the VRBO for where I've stayed in Haleiwa every time I was working at Schofield Barracks. It used to be a vet clinic and the couple that runs the place has a full quiver of boards for you to borrow. They are directly across the street from Chun's Reef. The rates are very reasonable and each unit has a full kitchen and fridge. The roosters will wake you early. Just a mile walk from Waimea Bay. I played slack key for my dinner and the owner is trying his hand at making guitars and ukuleles. They raise their own chickes and your fridge is full of fresh eggs. They sell their considerable fruit and veggies at the weekly Farmer's market.
Word of warning -- Debbie didn't like it. |

If you plan on a rental car, Waikiki is about 20 minutes from Kailua over the Pali. There are no hotels but many vacation rentals available there through vrbo.com and airbnb.com . The beach is beyond exquisite, Honey's is nearby (Mike Kaawa and the Hawaiian Boy Crew early Sunday) and Hawai`i Kai is just down the road (Ledward Kaapana late Sunday). There've been some wonderful restaurant openings in the last couple of years along with old standbys like Zippy's, Big City Diner, and Cinnamon's. There's even a music store for strings and cords forgotten at home and a record store with a nice selection of Hawaiian discs. About the only thing missing is a venue featuring traditional Hawaiian music on a regular schedule, but there are occasional events featuring artists like Weldon Kekauoha, Ledward, Cyril, and of course, Mihana Aluli Souza and her daughters carrying on the Puamana tradition.
Can you tell that I'm in love with Kailua?

My wife and I will be in Honolulu for vacation starting on NOV 20th through the 29th. I have the Bishop Museum kanikapila on the calendar, anything else that might be of interest to a student of kihoalu? Looking forwards to meeting many whom I have read about through the community here on taropatch.

I'll admit to being biased, but I would say that Ledward Kaapana's show at the Kona Brewing Company in Hawai`i Kai is _the_ ki ho`alu event to attend. Ledward is a master, of course, but amazingly he keeps getting better. He's usually accompanied by his sister these days, so the experience is as close as we can get to those long ago days of Kalapana. The audience is warm and enthusiastic, a wonderful mix of regulars and visitors from all over the world. Guest artists range from the guy down the street to well known virtuosi like Dennis Kamakahi and Jerry Santos to wonderful players from Japan, Europe, and the mainland.
Jerry Santos is a regular at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, they've moved the show to the Tapa Bar which is a lovely place to enjoy the music. He performs with different lineups on Friday and Saturday evening, mixing his Olomana hits with a rich selection of traditional tunes all played in his own charming slack key style.
The Kanikapila Grill at the Outrigger Reef has great Hawaiian music every night. Here's the current schedule: http://www.outrigger.com/~/media/Brochures/Outrigger-Reef-on-the-Beach-Hawaii/Kani-Ka-Pila-Grille-Entertainment-Schedule.pdf
We haven't made it in person, but all our buddies are telling us that the Corner Kitchen on Kapahulu http://www.cornerkitchenhawaii.com is a great way to spend an evening, with excellent food, a friendly crowd, and fine music every night.

Aloha, I have to chime in about Ledward. I saw him at Surfer The Bar a little while ago and was blown away! I get chicken skin just thinking about it. Like Fran said, there was a big local contingent from Hau'ula that came to see him and us regular folk.:)He was warm, funny and just plain awesome! Don't miss him! |

Mahalo plenty, all sounds great, will definitely try to see Led at Koko Marina. Don't like the Waikiki action so the Outrigger and HHV probably lower on the hit list. Corner Kitchen is definitely more my speed. Used to go there when it was Harpos.

That brings back memories. As a kid I used to surf there sometimes. Nice smaller waves. I am surprized it still has the same name. |

If you get a car, and you'll need one to See Led at the Kona Brewery and to go to the Bishop Museum and the Waimae Valley kanekapilas. The Marriott and the hotels around the Outrigger have validated parking. Be sure to go to the Moana Terrace Thursday anight for the Keawe family show. Like Led's shows, there are a lot of dancers, musicians and ohana there. |

I know just what you mean about Waikiki, but there's plenty of free parking (validate at the Tapa Bar) at HHV and Jerry's show is just charming as can be. We go on Saturday in hopes of catching Haunani Apoliona, but the Friday show has many fans as well. And the audience is plenty of locals with a sprinkle of tourists who are clearly being ensnared by Hawaiian music.
I think valet is $7 at the Outrigger, and the food is decent, but the artists who play there are so strong, and there's a pretty good showing by the local music lovers. We run into a lot of the same people at nearly every venue.

Oh, I would crawl on broken glass to see Jerry Santos! That voice.... is magic! And his Aloha Spirit shines through. I'm so fortunate I got to see him in Colorado many years ago.. will never forget. Best to you, Jerry! |

I opened a show for Ledward at Surfer the Bar on a Monday a couple of weeks ago. The crowd was wonderful, they filled the bar from about 8 to 9, and the management was talking to Led and Sharon about coming back for a Friday night. It's a lovely room with a terrific sound system and fine pupus.

I agree! The best thing that happened to the North Shore in a while :) Great venue and, as you mentioned, pupus. I hope they are successful and continue to bring Hawai'i talent to that part of the island.I'll be back in February and will keep my eye open for who's playing. Should I hear your name, I'll be sure to come say hello.:) |
