Tula Productions presents their 12th Hawaiian Christmas Concert concert with The Makaha Sons on their 36th anniversary tour. The Sons have received numerous proclamations and awards, both here and in the continental U.S. for their continuous and undying efforts in perpetuating Hawaiian culture through music.
This concert we pay tribute to John "King" Koko. John was always fun loving and he was the rascal. The Nanakuli native joined the Makaha Sons of Niihau in 1982. When John Koko entered the group, he joined brother Jerome, Moon Kauakahi and the world-famous Israel Kamakawiwoole.
We will have a "Kokolicious Day" filled with Hawaiian music and hula.

Mahalo Tula,
It will be a bitter sweet show. Will it be just Jerome and Moon playing?

Good show. My usual complaint for their regular San Diego Christmas appearance (and I've been to a dozen of them) is too much routine Christmas music. This time however, they did three Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewitt Christmas tunes and a couple of Moon's Christmas originals. If I have to listen to Christmas music, this is how it should be at a Hawaiian music event. Hawaiian Christmas music.
There were two other memorable moments. The first was their "last" song. For most Makaha Sons fans, Mehameha/White Sandy Beach is always a "for sure" tune at their performances. They waited til the end to do it. Plus, they performed it with 5 different halau dancing. The stage, and the floor in front of the stage, were filled with dancers. I can't imagine how long it took to get them all in sync in practice. Spectacular!
The second memorable moment was the hana hou. My favorite Makaha Sons tune is Ke Alaula. This is a chant put to music by Moon Kauakahi and first recorded in 1994. In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful Hawaiian songs ever performed. The Makaha Sons harmony and music just adds to the effect. Moon has to be one of the most underrated Hawaiian composers. They did Ke Alaula in a medly with Kui Lee's I'll Remember You. Again, Spectacular!
Finally, Eric Lee did a remarkable stand-in for Uncle John Koko. I understand that Eric Lee is an accomplished musician and can play almost any style. He did some solo vocals last night and sounded polished and prepared. John will never be replaced, but as a group, the guys didn't miss a beat.

Mahalo for the wonderful review! It was very challendging not have our beloved John Koko with us, but it was a wonderful show. Eric Lee did a fabulous job and he really fits in with both Jerome and Moon.
The Halau were wonderful and it really didn't take that long to get them in Sync.
Aloha no, Tula |
