Not too bad, although shallow and occasionally a bit mis-informed.
North Kohala was essentially forced to shift to the arts when the sugar industry collapsed. Although painful for some, to an outsider from Hamakua (my property boundary is an hour's walk from the North Kohala district boundary, after all!) the transition seemed a positive one. Kohala's transition left me confident that Hamakua, too, would evolve and thrive without the sugar company, and while Hamakua overall has gone rather more agricultural Honokaa has also become a bit of an arts town.
Hopefully we can continue down that path, and both Hamakua and North Kohala can avoid the corporate, low wage, culture-destroying tourism that curses South Kohala and North Kona. |
