with Keoki, Nancy and Richard Ho'opi'i... check his sight for more exact tour info this week.
Karen and I hope to drop by for a quick Aloha/Howdy, around sound check time in Taos Friday! Then rush off to south end of town to play gig with friends "The Rifters" at the Sagebrush--where 2 step rules.
George's entourage are also in Alburquerque tonight, Alamagordo Thursday, and then Taos Friday. So check it out, if you're in that part of the New Mexico Rift Zone!

Yikes--after Thurs. night, they drive about 400 miles to make Taos! And the "shorter" way (on Mapquest) is across land that "fell off the moon" methinks... or WAY OUT THERE! Guess that's why the aliens land out there!
I actually liked some of that drive South of Sante Fe-- last summer--pretty unique--recommended on sunny days, during those awesome afternoon Thunder showers, or perhaps a moonlit night (once in awhile!)--but that was mo' betta when I was younger. What a hustle for our friends! Good luck guys, and hope you get some sleep too.

so this is a report, not really a review... but it is a report from the "high road to Taos".
We searched out the guys, and girls... but just missed them at sound check, so went to Doc Martin's at Taos Inn, (happy hour)and also the Inn where they were staying. I chose to text, hoping to connect without disturbing much needed naps! Within' 2 minutes of texting Keoki, he was standing beside us in the Atrium bar! Looking great, healthy, and visited with us and curious folks around us, till time to go next door at Taos Cultural Center concert hall. He had hot tea, while we were a having margs...
He looks really great--healthy and happy, if just a little tired.
Next door, Nancy and Keoki's lady were setting up cd's, (exactly what my wife would have been doing--except Karen doesn't do hula at my shows!, and then was allowed into hall a little early to get some quick hi's and a little visiting with George, Richard Ho'opi'i, and his wife Ululani before I reluctantly had to leave for my gig on south end of town.
They had driven up from Alamagordo, (about 450 mile haul--and not interstate). AND they had left early (5 AM wakeup call) to play for the students at Taos High School. (Doesn't that sound like typical Kahumoku dedication and energy?) Just admirable...the passion to connect, share aloha, and show people-- to share and be proud of their culture, music, traditions, etc. Their wahine were part of show and road enegy. Richard is looking great--down from nearly 500 lbs. to 200, and still going a little lower--all on his own initiative. Taos is at 6,000 ft. or so, and with the road hours and performances doubt Richard could have done this tour, before his awesome work to lose weight and improve his health... Didn't get to stay, but sales and interest were high. (People noticed Keoki at Doc's--as used as folks are there to a mix of cultures--, and several were motivated to go check out the show next door.
Also found a great article on George (on cover)and the rest in Northern New Mexico's "Tempo", the Arts & Entertainment Magazine of the Taos News, for Feb.14-20, 2013.
Article is: "Tropical Paradise; Masters of Hawaiian music bring a taste of the isands right in the middle of winter". Saved some copies, but hopefully available on line. Mahalo Nui Loa to the tour...and it continues--what road warriors.

And while I'm talking to myself! They had 500 folks in Alamagordo the night before Taos! So turnouts have been superb. The article and picture IS available on line.
The Taos News: Entertainment Feb. 17th, well it didn't come though as a link, but bet ya'll can handle it.

I thought I'd post here so Kapila Kane wouldn't be talking to himself like he does at home . Here's the link to the nice Taos News article on George, Keoki, and Richard: http://www.taosnews.com/entertainment/article_8adf17f2-76ea-11e2-9391-0019bb2963f4.html . Kapila Kane, it's cool that you bumped into them in New Mexico of all places. Hey, when are you coming back to N. Cal?
Aloha, Doug |

Thanks Doug, working on something with Karen, something in March. so maybe talk, if going the right direction, or better yet sitting still for a couple days, maybe a kanikapila, or whatever. Miss the kanikapila gang, and seems to be a little tricky to get away to camp as much. Got a little spoiled in the 00's...ah, the good ol' days!
The Kahumoku gang are really doing a grueling tour!
I'm just doing short hit and run stuff, much easier, saner, but less profit! I will be in Phoenix tomorrow, (which is where the Hawaiian gang is running through) , but unless I see them in the airport, we have to run north to Sedona. May have to try that texting thing to Keoki--seems to work!
The travelling may sound glamorous, but as a Taurus homebody, not as into it as when I was 23, which is way before the 00's... now they have to tear my hands off the guitar and couch! But the warmth will be nice once they get me on the plane.
Wait, "00's" isn't that a type of lava?
Hey, Keoki's camp is now in November, so if I can just stay underemployed, maybe go to Big Island--we'll see! |

George and company are in Tucson tonight and Phoenix tomorrow night. I'm in Tucson and have had my tickets for almost 6 month. Tucson in the past has done pretty good in supporting Hawaiian music. Sadly, I just looked and there seems to be plenty of seats avail. |

The concert in Tucson was great. Especially enjoyed Keoki's solo set. The theatre wasn't full, but plenty people showed up for a good time. Anybody know what guitar Keoki's playing on this tour? It's small bodied, but fairly deep. Maple back and sides, and a slotted headstock. Has a nice old school sound. |
