Not there, but just played through there... kinda amazing pickers, lots of high end guitar and other pickers. but lots of Austin is sorta hung up on being a big Nashville, who take themselves to be bigger and more important?
yet, check with some good string shops, or see if there's any Hawaiian food places... something's got to be hiding under a city that big and hung up on music. I was there in 1975, and it was a great little city of about 300 K, not so little now...as with lots of Texas, they do tend to sprawl.
and I know there's kids there who would love to learn some ukulele... That reminds me, I need to send a set of uke strings to my hosts last weekend--the 4 year old was trying to play his Mahalos uke with a broken string, so it had no 4th string G.
Yessirree Bob, The ukes (like rattlesnakes) are certainly around, and there's also gotta be some pickers that do some slack key, or could, and lots of those songwriters like open tunings for creating songs... Ya'll know there's quite a few ukesters and Hawaii lovers in Nashville...and Texas surely can't let them win, or be hipper than Austin. But without ukes, they're just stuck trying to be commercial formulas, whatever that is these days, and they lack hipness and ukeneakness. hook 'em ukes. |
