Howzit 'Patchers
Wanda & Paul Certo and I had dinner with Ozzie Kotani last night. Before & after the dinner we were at Ozzie's place talking story. While there Oz gave us a preview of the master of his new CD. We got to listen to the CD & read the wonderful liner notes.
This CD is a little different for Oz because he has a vocalist singing on a couple of cuts. Then there's one where his playing a duet with his haumana Ryan ( Sorry I forgot his last name ) I think on one of the cuts with the female vocalist there was some synthesized bass, cello & strings played by the guy who plays keys for Na Pilimehana. Although the concept is a little new age-like, Ozzie does play some old fashioned traditional sounding ki ho'alu on that track.
Ozzie also has 3 or 4 tracks featuring a new G6th tuning that he came across. It's different from what slackers may be familiar with as G6th. Oz asked that I not reveal the tuning at this time but I believe it is in the liner notes. To quote Paul Certo "The tuning has a haunting sound to it "I perceive it as sounding old timey.
I'm guess-timating that it will be ready for purchase in 4 to 6 weeks. I believe Oz said he only plans to sell CDs through his website & he's only printng a thousand copies. I may be biased because Oz is a good friend but I think it's well worth purchasing. If anything, go get it just to hear that new take on the G6th tuning. Mahalo for reading my long winded post

| Hopefully Ozzie will make an announcement here on "da patch" so we can get first crack at the first printing of CD's. |

| I am excited about the new CD. do u folks think that the G6th tuning may have minor chords as I think they have a haunting sound to them. I like that sound. Cant wait for the news about the tuning. |

All tunings have all chords. None of the notes disappear in any tuning, they're simply shifted in location.
Which minor chords are you seeking?
In taropatch tuning:
E minor - 1-2 2-0 3-0 4-2 (String-Fret)
A minor - 2-1 3-2 4-2 5-2
And the A minor is moveable, so it becomes any minor chord you need as you move it up the neck.

I forgot to mention that Ozzie does a song written by Queen Liliu' okalani that has never been recorded.
Another song Oz did on the CD is "Ka Wailele O' Nu'uanu" which I swore he had recorded on his earlier CDs
Here's a video of one of Ozzie's haumana Mark Kuramoto playing that song. I think this may be right up your alley Fran & I got the tabs if you want them.

Hmmm, I wonder - Manu Boyd & some folks at the hula conference in Vancouver wrote a song by that name a few years back, and I wonder if that's the same.
If it is, there are a few 'patchers who know that song - they backed me up singing it at our halau's Folklife performance a few years ago, when I jumped in last-minute to lead a band when our kumu was called away to Hawai`i days before the show.
Whether 'tis or 'tisn't, I really am looking forward to this CD - new Ozzie is always reason to celebrate. |

Here's the problem, Duke. Lynn dances "Ka Wailele O Nu`uanu," in fact she's working on her second version, and I told her a long time ago that this song cannot be done in slack key - so please keep your information quiet. I don't want to become a human jukebox/halau slave! (grin)

| Ozzie taught this tune at a workshop in LA about 10 years ago. I have the video and tabs and have played it for years. Accordingly, the notes say the author was Jeff Kauka? |

| Ozzie also shared this tab with us at George's camp in 2003. Several of us have been playing it since. I love the arrangement. Sounds just a bit Japanese (okinawan?) |

Sorry I'm so late to jump into this message topic. Thanks so much for posting Duke! The CD is titled Island View and is my return to a mix of traditional and contemporary compositions and arrangements. There are 6 compositions, 4 of which are in the new tuning I've messed with a bit. I decided to do 4 songs to "legitimize" the tuning - to show the diversity that can be executed. There is also the title track that features my collaboration with a songwriter and a talented vocalist - as well as keyboards - in a key I've never played in. There are 14 cuts total on the recording and I will be posting liner notes and audio clips on my website later. My last recording, Ho`ihi, was intentionally done to reflect that we have a tradition, historic recordings, and an identity amongst other guitar styles. It was all about respect for those who came before. Glad to be back doing what I enjoy most - arranging and composing what I like to play! There are ballads and a Lili`uokalani composition as mentioned by Duke, as well as a couple of duets. Thanks so much for the kind comments and words of support - I know many of you and have aloha and fond memories in my heart.

I already play so many Ozzie compositions and arrangements that I am becoming self conscious about it.
But, I will buy the CD when it is released and most likely be tempted to add more.  |
