Hi.
A question that has been a mystery to me and others here in England
of the steel guitarist playing with the Pacific Serenaders, there is very little detail included with the Album so we are all left to guess
who the players were, for our purposes the Steel Guitarist in my opinion
could be Gabby Pahinui, it is of interest to me because of the track "Aloha Oe" (which is featured on You Tube)and the use of the volume pedal, I really like this style of playing and it has been a feature in Hawaiian Music for many years, players like George de Fretes, Rudy Wairata, Roland Peachey,(his playing "Song of the Islands" can also be
seen on You tube, since the release of Pathe material held on their website, another current player using this style is Walter Niesing who
is an exceptional player, many pundits from the 40s & 50s deemed excessive use of this pedal "Vulgar" but this is not my view, neither
did the Honolulu Queens think so with "Mauna Kea" so to get back to my
Query was the player Gabby? anybody know?

I'll have to check with Alan Akaka, but my understanding is that Barney Isaacs and Pua Almeida are the steel players, both playing pedal steels (record was done in the early 60's). Eddie Kamai is on uke, Gabby is playing guitar, and Nina Keali'iwohauman adds vocals. I have the CD around somewhere, and I'll try and find it to verify what I've said.  |

Thanks, I hope Alan can confirm what you have said, the Album when
released had no detail of the players, my Recording Stereo Gold Award
MER 310, Hits of Hawaii/ Pacific Serenaders is like many recordings in
that there is no data to enable any purchaser to follow up with further recordings of any particular player, many Tahitian and Indonesian recordings are also like this, trying to find the steel guitarist on say the Trio Ambisi Recordings is virtually impossible,
I feel that this is detrimental to the players, they remain unknown
and in many cases they are the reason the person is buying the recording
Obligatory listing of the contributors to any recording is necessary
as well as credits & copyright,how this has never happened I will never know, but it would help to put much needed funds in the direction of the musicians.

| I won't talk with Alan until Friday, but I remember that he told me that this album and the "Slack and Steel" albums were cut back in the 60's as "supermarket" (i.e., discount rack) items, and the producers got folks from "The Sons of Hawaii", Don Ho's Ali'is and other prominent groups to cut the records. |

Excellent thanks, it appears then by what you have said this band actually did not exist, and the
musicians were selected then purely for a commercial purpose,or as you have said "supermarket" recordings, with no details.
