Hi Andy,
I have a question about the tag on all our member names. You are Administrator and all of us are Starting Members. For a long time, I thought that was like Charter Member; every person who registered within the first few months or first year would be a Starting Member.
I wandered into the Snitz site, and discovered it's tied to a member's number of posts. Sure enough, when I hit 50 posts I was reborn. I am now a New Member.
Can you give us a rundown on the levels and names of the levels or will we just have to hang around and discover on our own? Do you take requests for level names? Something slack key related would be fun, like the names of the tunings, or sea shell varieties (we'd never get that straight ), or ... How many kinds of surf waves have names?

Aloha e Pauline,
I have no idea about "levels" of membership, but I can tell you that the names of surf or winds (makani) or shells depends on where you live. Sarah and I have a few running jokes about the names of makani (and the number characteristic of slogans during Chairman Mao's "Cultural Revolution", which I have been reading about lately, - like the "Six Round Things" - don't ask) and we are trying to give names to the winds of Hamden, CT. Very hard. Not poetic.
Anyway, the winds on Maui, near Wailuku, are "gently pinching" and in Hana they are slightly more boisterous. But, I vote for "makani `inikiniki malie" and I want to be at the "Waihe`e makani kili`o`opu" (graceful) level.
So, Admin deah, make us all the level that we want to be at. As Keola said, "You Da Man!"

Great question Pauline! BTW, congrats on being the 1st person to graduate to the next level! I feel like you should win something... I'll have to think about that.
Here are the default member rankings:
Starting Member (0-49 posts) New Member (50-99 posts) Junior Member (100-499 posts) Average Member (500-999 posts) Senior Member (1000-1999 posts) Advanced Member (2000+ posts)
I am open to suggestions for better ranking titles. Who'd want to be an "Average Member"?!?! Any ideas out there? Something Hawaiian and not too long?
Aloha, Andy

How about...
- Mualoa (First)
- Kualua (Second)
- Hapakolu (Third)
- Hapaha (Fourth)
- Hapalima (Fifth)
?
But someone who actually speaks ka ole`lo should verify these. Don't rely on a DFH with a Pukui and Elbert, yeah?
Aloha a hui hou, Chris P. |

Sounding good. Sounding really good. I like the suggestions.
I did put a call in to Hawaiian language expert Kaliko Beamer-Trapp who says he's up for the challenge. He's taking a little time to think about it.
Let's see what he comes up with and then vote?

Delayed but not forgotten. I shot Kaliko an email this past week to make sure he hadn't forgotten about us. My how the time flies...

I just had the same question when I saw Pauline's had changed from Starting Member to Junior Member. I was wondering why she had been "downgraded" to Junior. I assumed Starting member was a charter member and that Junior was somehow less, then noticed I had moved to Starting Member and was really curious. Then I found this thread.
What is the value of tagging member's name that way? The number of posts conveys the same information and since those levels are just arbitrary milestones, it seems that the label just ends up getting misunderstood. Isn't this why this thread was started?
If you allowed guests to post, you differentiate between members and guests, but that is a moot point. Another option, if gaining funding is a real concern, would be to differentiate between donating members and not. Of course the forum software may not provide this flexibility. Just some thoughts.

The member rankings are built into the forum software. Could probably do away with them, but I think there is agreement to do something fun with them.
I also think most would agree that it is ludicrous that number of posts should imply any sort of superior knowledge so the names should be something Hawai`i/slack key related but really have real actual significance. That is, no one person should be superior to another.
I'd been waiting on some ideas from a Hawaiian language expert, but realizing that he has been extememly busy, we can pick our own. Anyone care to start voting? I like the island idea. Additional ideas or thoughts?
tonewoods: walnut spruce rosewood redwood mango koa
tunings: standard taropatch double slack wahine ni`ihau mauna loa
Or these from Auntie D's hawaiian language page: Aloha - mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return; Akahai - meaning kindness to be expressed with tenderness; Lokahi - meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony; `Olu`olu - meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness; Ha`aha`a - meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty; Ahonui - meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance.
Even though I do not know Hawaiian, I like these. Seems like they state so much about the learning process of music as well as the spirit we strive for here.

Not sure if any of these are made of mango, but I know Keola Beamer owns a guitar made of mango wood. I believe he has commented that it sounds great but that mango wood is relatively soft so it requires a lot of care.

Andy,
The Hawaiian words you listed, aloha, akahai, lokahi, 'olu'olu, ha'oaha'a, and ahonui would be a lovely way to start.
And then, I really like jwn's idea, slip in a different 6 Hawaiian words every now and then - colors, numbers, foods, islands, anything. That would be fun, especially when members start getting into the higher post counts so there will be more variety after our names.

Okay. Still taking ideas and votes, but I had a few minutes while waiting for my coffee this morning so decided to give it a try.

I do not know if it's the correct usage or context. I welcome any help from language experts, but otherwise you get the idea.
