Seems a good fit, eh? I know many friends here are light years ahead of me on Zen-iness, although only a few have me beat for Zany-ness.
But since I'm working (slowly) through "Mindfulness, and eight week plan ( make that 16 weeks for me) for finding Peace in a Frantic World." by Mark Williams and Danny Penman. Yes, I know these techniques have been around for centuries! only without the online activities...
Was recommended by one of my favorite doctors, who thought a little more calmness might be good for my mutli-trac mind. So I got the book, which is now on a best-seller list I hear.
Today, since I'm not supposed to read and drive, and also because I try to keep my cool, I took Keola's "Island "Born" along for my cross-town traffic errand... Almost felt like a Mindfullness graduate--thanks Keola.
It worked--The right cuts of slack key make a great path to a little "Mindfulness". And always knew it, but tend to forget what I used to know. Of course, I stay away from Whee-Ha Swing while driving.
Any other favorites with the Taropatch pickers? And what's the best wine pairing? Just joking!

Beverage: anything tasty and wet. Mindfulness, just fooling around trying new tunes, chords, patterns, playing stuff I know but trying different things.

As I drove off to my workout, Keola's flute work took me away. So calm and stunning. And I realized I'm like the 3rd grader that stands at "show and tell", not because there's something important...but because I wanted to have something to show an tell. When reading the credits and seeing George Winston , and thinking of the whole Dancing Cat projects... There's almost nothing BUT mindfulness in this music. Or as the Police Captain said in Casablanca... "I'm shocked, shocked to learn there's gambling going on here!" (" Sir, here's your winnings")
So just sitting to learn, play and share, brings one into a zone. Or just listening for awhile.

I do some "therapeutic music" guitar & singing for hospice patients. Some [esp Alz' patients] like "familiar" music, incl hapa-haole standards of yore. I find many patients respond well to the lowered tunings and "nahenahe" mindfulness of slack key guitar. I sometimes will sing the Hawai`ian words too - there's a belief amongst some practitioners [incl me] that singing in a language the patient doesn't know can help ease them without "distracting" by specific word/story-meaning. We NEVER proselytize spirituality in therapeutic music, but sharing any path to an eased mind [even one that's "confused" by conventional measures] is a gift many seem to benefit from. Heck, none of us is gettin' outa here alive... these patients are still "here" for now, so now feels like the time to do what one can for 'em, if/as one is able. |

I keep trying to get a local artist to get more "hooked" on slack and Hawaiian. Seems to be pretty Zen to me. And that group, "Dakota Blonde" --very folk, but just wonderful. And they are ALL certified music therapists. Except the fiddler and the other guy--we're just patients! |

When I play my 'ukulele, I feel like I'm in another world completely. This little instrument is my comforter. If I'm sad my 'ukulele makes me happy. I even feel like I'm a part of it sometimes. For example, when the beauty in its sound started to disappear, I felt sad because I missed that full, rich sound it used to have. It's doing a lot better now though since I had the strings changed! I can finally disappear to the beaches of Hawai'i once more! |

Dakota Blonde looks cool, sounds cooler - nice harmonies on "Go Down to the Ocean". Got a kick as my "name" on some other fora is 'Dakota Red' due to color of my '60 Esquire. One can in fact play slack key on a vtg slabneck Fender but likely not for hospice patients... |
