Just had a repair of right shoulder cuff...
Yikes...but since there are a few of us over 50 here, and even young (under 50 folks can need a repair here or there...I suspect there's some others that have been here and done this.

any advice or voices of experience out there?
I thought it would be the easier "decompression" , with a shorter rehabilitation...
but no, it was a full tear...
Now it's gotta be a slow PATIENT climb back,
6 weeks in a sling, then 4-6 months of rehabilitation!
So , while NO bowing (violin) for several months,
and no big acoustic guitars, in fact zero for awhile...
Well, NOW I have time on my hands, but limited use!

HOWEVER, I am doing first preliminary fingers, wrist, elbow down movement therapy.
VERY rudimentary

IF you have experience, or knowledge, I'd love to hear...but will still have to check it out with "my people".

ZEN, slow and careful will be the general approach, but to keep active and keep cabin fever at bay --I need a plan!
First, more SINGING, song and Hawaiian language , and singing exercises (Friends, Romans, Hawaiians and Countrymen-- Cover your ears!

And, with caution, I hope to hold guitars and or a uke ( when ready) and do some simple therapeutic right hand strokes...since my first week's exercises start with arm in, but movements of fingers, wrist and basics, from the elbow down.

Ok, let the slings and arrows begin ( bringing my own sling)
And some of you know my caffeineated personality--so throw a few prayers for patience--but hurry!
Mindfulness perhaps...

I have shoulder issues but so far no surgery (knock on wood). Best wishes on your recovery.

When I was in physical rehab almost three years ago for other issues, my personality always heard the PT's request for ten reps as "thirteen or fourteen max effort reps". Don't do that. As my wife often says, "Don't be a guy", since us guys usually start going back at full intensity the moment they start to feel better at all - and usually way too early. Relax and do what they tell you, nothing more, nothing less. An orthopedic surgeon once told me that if you do something and it hurts in the joint (not just the muscles) five minutes after you stop, then you've overdone it. Back off or risk re-injury.

I have a Taylor T5 acquired specifically for use as a thin body guitar that is still fun to play and half-decent acoustically. It is more comfortable to play until you have healed than an electric guitar, but that would work too.

I believe this was caused ( does it matter?!) from lots of swimming, a slight acromium hook in shoulder joints, and of course some macho man moments during yard projects-- and oh yea, fiddling show- stoppers for 40 years! I curse the Irange Blossom Special!

Now doing my Therapy--Laying down, with the cooling machine as prescribed by the surgeon. He'd be here but is out driving his Maserati to the country club on Maui!
The good news, a friend was able to use a silent guitar with a narrower body a few weeks after his rotator surgery, And have arranged for one through a friend.
As they say, " Peace and Healing through Music "!

A friend went through carpal tunnel surgery (both arms) and did the PT. He's back to normal. Patience, work, work, and patience. If you need, get a harmonic with a holder. Don't get down, time will fly.

I had a nasty grease burn on my fretting fingers a couple of years ago. Finally got around to memorizing all the verses to Hi'ilawe, from He Mele Aloha book during that time. Once I could play again, I went right back to doing my old way. I still remember most of the verses though.

I know what it's like to have pain that drives a joy away from you! I had an issue with my jaw cracking and when I was trying to do exercise to make it better, I ended up straining it! Gosh did it ever hurt! It made it very hard to do leo ki'eki'e!
