I was in Phoenix to do some stuff for my mom this week and had some time to kill, so I googled guitar stores in the Chandler area (suburb). Found a place called Acoustic Vibes in Tempe and went to check it out. It's actually in an architect's office, so I was a little confused. A young women let me in to the back where I discovered Guitar Heaven; 4 huge rooms filled with nothing but excellent guitars. Just about every guitar I'd ever wished I could play. Bourgeois, Collings, Santa Cruz, Taylor, Martin Custom Shop, Gibson, Huss & Dalton, National, RainSong. You name it, it was probably there. I was the only one in the place and spent 2 hours playing. No one bothered me and no one else ever came in. One of the owners heard me playing and came in with several guitars that he thought would work with Slack Key tunings. They did and I played like I always wanted to. I would have had to sell my car to buy some of them, but it was great fun. I was a little embarrassed upon leaving because I didn't buy anything. They didn't seem to care. Maybe it was the Slack Key equivalent of Brigadoon. I'll go back and see next trip to Phoenix. Check them out on the web.

Sounds like a fun visit. Sadly, no Ovations in their website listing though :(
(Not entirely surprising, considering the US factory has only just restarted production after Fender shut it down last year, and the new models aren't out in punters' hands yet. I bet the new 50th Anniversary Collector's edition would be awesome for slack key, with its cedar top). |

Was there a couple of years ago, when last visiting the in-laws in Phoenix. It's an awesome low-key store with tons of really cool instruments. I have been to Elderly and to Gryphon many times, but Acoustic Vibes is right up there among the best stores around, and I will make it a point to go back whenever I can.
In fact, my wife is there this long holiday weekend, but I had to stay home to work and hold down the fort. |
