We're back on O`ahu after a marvelous holoholo to Hilo with Led and Sharon. Our first stop was `Akaka Falls State Park, where we hauled guitars and cameras down to the viewing area and had one chicken skin time.

There were about a dozen folks standing behind the camera shooting their own pictures and clips or just listening enthralled by the scene and the artist.

Fran, One of the reasons I still log in occasionally is anticipation of living vicariously through you. |

The scene along the Kalapana Coast is really something. I didn't get any useable shots but we made a couple of visits to Uncle Robert's Awa Bar. Uncle Robert is gone, but his ohana maintains the family compound and an adult recreation zone, I guess one might call it. Food, drinks, a covered pavilion with seating for about 300, a large parking area out on the lava, and a fully equipped performance stage with PA, organ, bass amp, drum kit, DIs and mic stands all in place all the time. There's a weekly open market that must bring in over 700 or more. Crafts, clothing, more food of all kinds, plus Hawaiian music followed by dance music, goes on from 5 or 6 in the evening until 3 or 4 the next morning. We left at 9, the line of cars parked along the road went for half a mile or more and people were still coming in as we were leaving.
Led's cousin, Ikaika Marzo, is a heckuvva hot rod picker, like Led he plays slack key, Punahoa style standard tuning, and his own stuff layered on top. The two of them had some epic exchanges.
Chuck Moore built Led's superlative `ukulele, the one with the black sand beach inlay on the headstock. He lives in Opihikao, right off the Kalapana-Kapoho Beach Road, so we stopped in for a visit. Led didn't have his uke with him so Chuck pulled his "shop uke" off the wall and Led played "Na Lei O Hawai`i" while I chased the chords in drop C capo 5 F.

We stayed at the Hilo Seaside and invariably wound up playing in the open air lobby at least once a day. The last day before heading to the airport I put up the cameras and caught this version of "Aloha `Ia `O Waianae" - some big fun. Check the koa on the wall behind us.
