Hi Fran, never been to the islands, but Kaua'i certainly is beautiful-images that stick with you once you see them, and can't imagine how amazing it would be to see them in person. Sure it would be one of my favorite places for the solitude and beauty for the wild places feeling it has. Thanks for the reminder about this special island, and also your beautiful music to go with it!
It's great to have more activity here, and thanks to you, more inspiration for the music too! |

If we are not on Hawaii Island scuba diving, then Kaua'i is our favorite island. We love to go see Doug and Sandy McMaster's shows at the Hanalei Community Center, and catch any other live local music we can find. We have not been able to make it to Kaua'i since the Aloha Music Camp moved to Princeville, however.
Playing ki hoalu and getting to jam or sit in with Led (and others)! Man, you are living the slack-key dream, Fran. |

My favorite "Kauai'i" song is "Koke'e" by Dennis David Kamakahi [RIP]. It name-checks Koloa, Poipu, Kalalau, Waimea, etc. I often sing it, accompanying self in open G/C bass. If doing instrumentally I retain that tuning but capo up to 7th fret. A Hawai`ian nephew with gorgeous ka leo ki'eki'e vocal ability sang "Hanalei Moon" [& many others] in key of F at cousin Noelani's wedding this last winter. I solved my "problem" accompanying him by tuning to F taropatch, blending nicely with his 8-str Kamaka taropatch uke. Many family members danced hula [incl surprise addition, nephew Kaimana who jumped in amongst his cousins and aunties]. Anybody remember Titus Kinimaka & his "Kauai'i Boys" band? |

I learned ki ho'alu back in 1974 from a friend of mine from Kaua'i. Dennis Kamakahi wrote a song about the guy's uncles from Ni'ihau. |

Wow, Duke that was amazing! You have a great voice, and this is so well done with your group that it sounds like a pro recording! Great sound, for sure!
Thank you for posting it here-I might never have heard it otherwise!

Mahalo for the kind words, Barry. Flattered that you liked it. In actuality I guess you could say it was professional done. Our instruments & vocals went directly into Derek "Hookani" Higa's (12 string Koa Taylor player) laptop so he was able tweak the levels & add some effects. He also dubbed in the bassline since our band's bassist couldn't make it that day.
What needs to be noted is that: Derek "Hookani" Higa---Hookani Samson Ah Mook Sang---olu143 Shawn Machida---S.M80808
And I, all meet here on the 'Patch. I've met so many people here on this website. Many are now lifelong friends. I've also hosted many kanikapila inspired by taropatch.net. |

Thanks Fran for your many posts but especially for Aloha Kauai, which I learned by watching you. Someday I hope our paths will cross. |

I've been playing Kaua'i Beauty in both C and F. It's full of single and double reverse slants in C6 tuning on the Steel Guitar! I also play Hanalei Moon, Hele On to Kaua'i and others. |
