I've found some youtube performances... but not finding lyrics, and wondering if there's a Sons of Hawaii, or Eddie Kamae, or Dennis Kamakahi version I'm missing... since it's, as they say, "It's all about the Waiolina"! It was Dennis who explained to me about Sam Lia and his use of violin.
Tried a couple spots on internet, including Huapala.org... but so far I'm not finding it.

while some of the you tubes were mediocre... (or is it Media Okra?). but now, I just found a WONDERFUL version, and player..."Kanaka Waiolina" performed by Shawn Ishimoto! And then I saw the Taropatch interview from 2011. Well if I wasn't a little behind, I'd have to break trail.
Great, vocal, playing, and version I love... it's got a lot of the backbeat that I've grown accustomed to playing into for years with Songwriter Chuck Pyle. The two/four slap was one of his favorite grooves... I didn't create those, but I loved to jump up on my board (fiddle) and ride the waves. Anyway, a cool version brings the song to life. |

(A translation will need to wait for another day...) It looks like I am playing and singing it in C.
