We hosted a back yard kanikapila for our ukulele club in our shaded back yard and porch a couple of weeks ago. Ten players and a half-dozen of our neighbors sitting outside the circle to listen. That worked so much better than Zoom. Maintaining social distance, it all worked pretty well. Another kani is pending for this Monday evening. We expect nice warm weather too.
Until we can gather indoors again, this is what we have - maybe not ideal but better than no music at all.

Once again, our ukulele club meets in our shaded backyard tonight for kanikapila. We've had a fair amount of activity there with guitar friends coming over to jam. Not a lot of connection with my local Hawaiian friends, though. All of the Uncles and Aunties (including me) are in high-risk groups and avoiding much direct contact.
And our Washington gathering in early October has now been officially cancelled. Understandable given the circumstances but we were really looking forward to the gathering. Sigh.... next year. |

Yay!! We had our first backyard kani of the year yesterday. It started with my guitar buddies jamming classic rock & roll. The ukulele club was supposed to come at 3 pm when it warmed up, but someone pulled the trigger early and sent a bulk email cancelling that morning when it was still cold and windy out. We have always met and played at senior centers, Those are still off-limits, so the only option is outdoors - when weather permits.
We had five players who had not checked their email. It was wonderful to play together again for the first time since early November. Sitting in the lee of the house and in the bright sun, we had big fun playing in t-shirts even though it was only 57°. We only stopped because of sore fingers. |

OK, we've been having backyard kani for a few weeks now. Some were cancelled due to cold or winds (gotta love that volatile spring weather) but most have been decently attended, and fun.
Now our club got the news - we can perform in the senior living center again starting on APR 26, but everyone has to show proof of vaccination to enter the campus. We're almost back, baby! |
