Most of my slack key tunes are traditional pieces but I have composed a few. My first composition came together on a vacation trip to O`ahu's North Shore and the little town of Waialua, hence the name. I got the urge to experiment with my video technique by plugging mics straight into the camera instead of doing parallel recording and syncing in post so I pulled out this old piece and did a new take on it.

The mics are Schoeps CMBI amps with MK41 hypercardioid caps, cameras are Panasonic Lumix GH5 and GH4, guitar is by Kathy Wingert, tuning is taropatch.

Nicely done as always, Fran!
Question: Since slack-key always seems to involve playing parallel sixths on the first and third strings, have you ever experimented with an unwound third string? To address finger squeak during movement between positions, I'm thinking something like a 21 gauge to keep the tension similar to a wound G string..... |

Thank you, gentlemen, just trying to do a little something to keep TP rolling.
Earl, I have experimented with a plain third, as I recall it was rather uncomfortable because of the stiffness especially near the nut. It's an easy cheap thing to try, though.

Earl, I've tried an unwound 3rd string back in the day. Difference in tension and tone... Too be and artist, ya gotta suffer - the elves in the Fractured Fairytale about the shoemaker and his wife (he wanted to make shoes that sing, shoes with sole!).

Thanks Fran and thumbstruck. Before experimenting, I would get a plain third that matches the tension of the wound third that is normal, not necessarily the same gauge. Not sure what gauge that would actually be, but I will research a bit and add a few singles to my next string order. I realize that keeping the string squeak down during moves is a matter of good technique, but I am far from perfect about that too.
It has been awfully quiet around here lately, but I still browse almost daily. Personally I am grateful for any posts and activity. |

People are very kind with their comments on YouTube, Facebook, and here, but the ones I cherish the most are those that mention family and home. Thanks so much.
