These are what I call "snapshots". Memories that play in my mind and make me smile.
We were in a song session in the grass under a tent at AMC, and suddenly, up the dirt road came lumbering this little golf cart. In the driver's seat was Kaliko Beamer-Trapp, who maybe weighs around 160 lbs. In the passenger seat was Liko Puha, somewhere around 500 lbs. As is so often the case, contrast can really tickle your funny bone. As these two dear people carefully rounded the bend and passed our class, a giggle arose from the crowd.
Someone in the class murmured: "Eh, da buggah lean to the right!"
At that point we almost fell off our chairs with merriment. I was too late and too occupied to grab my camera, (I had Mark's guitar in my hands and couldn't just drop it!) but in my mind's eye there will always be that image of that little cart, with it's little fringe on top and it's precious cargo, struggling up the hill, with both occupants totally oblivious of the wonderful picture they presented.

Nice snapshot and story, Julie. You described it well and I could picture it in my minds eye. I had to laugh to myself too! Mahalo for sharing. |

Reminds me of the T-Shirt I saw on a "very large Kanaka" at Fran Guidry's Kanikapila in Kailua a few weeks ago. The drawing on the back of the shirt had a cariacture of a Beeg Bruddah leaning to one side and standing on one leg. The caption below said, "Caution, Dis Bruddah Makes Wide Turns!"

Julie -- although I didn't see that particular 'photo' while at AMC, there were so many similar. AMC is an amazing experience. I was fortunate enough to have a tentalow close to Liko's, and could hear him chanting in the morning. What a beautiful way to start the day. Thank you for sharing that story... |

Oh Julie -- I've known "Liko" for about 15 years...way back when his name was Marv. For those who haven't yet had the joy of meeting this big huggy-bear: http://www.manapualabs.com/aloha/
The mental image your "snapshot" gave me, of him driving a golf cart, gave me a good giggle. Mahalo for sharing! |

Better yet -- no mental image required, to see Liko & Kaliko in a side-by-side pose! http://www.alohamusiccamp.com/molokai_pix_sm2/Kaliko_Liko_kapikosm.jpg |

Julie, As someone who watched the golf cart loaded with Kaliko and Liko chug up the hill, I salute you for reminding me!
It was great meeting you and your family. You danced an awesome Wahine 'Ilikea on hale 34! You made me grin when you told Jason, "Never keep the dancers waiting!"
Camp was incredible. I did not take a single photograph, but after camp I locked myself in my hotel room in Oahu and wrote about 40 pages of notes of things I don't want to forget.
The moonlight was magical. The people were magical. Liko just about blew my mind. I learned so much during Oli 1 and Oli 2 class. I wish there was more oli in nyc.
AMC was even better this year than last. Hats off to Mark, Annie and the Beamer Ohana and all the instructors.
Before we left, we chanted to the ocean...then we kanikapilaed in the taxi cab with our awesome cabdriver from Hele Mai taxi who performed a seated hula while driving.
AMC was a rollicking, amazing, humbling week.
My favorite snapshot: playing an 8 string KP uke while backing up Jason when he sang a Medley of Henehene Kou 'Aka and Molokai Waltz for a hula by Aunty Irene, the foxiest 90 year old kapuna from Lanai.
When Aunty Irene danced Lanai-style, she blew the roof off the tent. I couldn't stop my tears as she gestured to Auntie Nona during Molokai Waltz.
Aloha to all the campers, brooklyn kris
