No my plate stay full already. I did six years community service in da ol' days and I no it haz a high opportunity cost. Rite now fo send my kid to NYU is costing us one Mercedez per year, daz wid out gaz. She iz doing great ova dea so we sendin her back fo next two and a half years -- she will finish up early.
I could make an argument for such a program and leverage it with local students asking "yeah how come no moa pidgin studies?" There already is a substantial body of data on hand from sociology, ethnic studies, linguistics, history and anthropology. There are no guarantees, but it will take a long time to get it through. I can only speak from my experience here at UH. I first started teaching non-credit courses in 1972 when I was a student at UH. My tenure as Faculty/Staff (as an educational specialist) with the Music Department started in 1982. Although the studies and curriculum submissions to change the status to an accredited program were made around 1980 by Dr. Barbara Smith, PhD., she was my mentor while I was on grant at the East West Center's Cultural Learning Insitute, the UH board of Regents did not act upon it until 1998. A period of 18 years. And by this time I was diagnosed with cancer. So the job went to Oz, who I mentored, and who was the best choice, but things didn't work out so well so he left after the first year of accreditation. So the job was offered to me along with the Hawaiian Ensembles when I returned from sick leave. It takes a long time for a program to get accreditation. There are a lot of politics going on and not enough money for all of the programs. |

Great. We lose the Pidgin and gain Legalese. Not an improvement to the thread. |

Okay, I waited a couple of days before wading into this thread. I saw Nancy's post, knew it was going to cause an uproar, and instead of making myself mad by keeping up with the thread, I just left it for a few days. My rule is if I can't post with aloha, I don't post. Please do not interpret that as an admonition to those who didn't wait - I completely understand the impulse.
Glennpachi has chosen to out his educational credentials, so I will too. I have a law degree. After passing the bar in two states, I decided not to practice law after all (I joke that I am unemployable in two jurisdictions). I am a woefully overqualified legal secretary, but I enjoy my job and the people I work with, so I count myself lucky (especially since I've finally paid off my student loans).
I will never disown my pidgin roots. I was lucky enough to know two of my great grandmothers, both first-generation Okinawan immigrants. The best English they could muster was pidgin. All four grandparents spoke pidgin, even the two who were teachers. One grandmother, who only has an eighth grade education, left school to work to help her family. She raised two of her husband's siblings as her own, in addition to her two birth kids. She may be "uneducated," but she's one of the smartest people I know and one of my heroes.
I've never met Nancy, but I've communicated with her off board, and I like her. Having calmed down a bit, I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Most of the time, when a thread gets incendiary, I just leave it alone because I'm not good at putting things diplomatically like Gregg (and frankly, I'm not brave enough). This one hit a little too close to home for me to leave it alone.
'kay, den, nuff arready. Somboddy han me one cold one. Eh, Glenpachi, wat you wen catch lately? Get nuff wattah wea you stay, mus get someting fo catch o wat? An stay hot enuf wea Guava stay, he can fry 'em fo yu! |
