I'm planning on featuring "The Singing Cabdriver" during one of my upcoming radio shows. I was wondering if anyone would care to share some interesting talk story they may have about her.

Al, it must have been a great show and an even greater car ride.

Nah,nah, Ed. That can't be all. You need for elucidate on that kolohe-ness, If she was kolohe, it would be compounded exponentially by your kolohe-ness. There must be plenty stories then.

Mahalo Ed for the reply. I did a web search for this song and couldn't find any listing for anyone who has recorded it. It would be great to find it again. If anyone out there knows a recorded version of if please let us know. |

Kui Lee wrote 'em, Don Ho also recorded it (on the album "Suck 'Em Up," if memory serves me). |

Ask Bill (a.k.a. "hwnmusiclives" on this forum). If it was ever recorded, he probably has it! |

I don't see it listed on Ms. Hilo's three Lehua albums for which I have info ("The Singing Cab Driver," "Will You Love Me When My Carburetor's Busted" or "Mahalo Plenty"), but I know she did at least two more albums. I gots no further details, though. |

I have those three albums also, and have also read that she did a total of 5 albums, but for the life of me I can't find any reference to the other two albums. I wonder if they really do exist. |

I actually just now found a version of "Kanaka Pete" From a Jack de Mello album, "Jack de Mello Plays The Music Of Kui Lee". Hadn't gotten around to transferring it to CD yet, so I forgot I even had it.
According to Brett Ortone's book, this version and the Don Ho version are the only two recordings of "Kanaka Pete".
Also Ortone's book only lists 3 albums by Myrtle K Hilo, so I'm still wondering about those supposed other two. |

ED,
I took it to mean it was a LIVE version of Kanaka Pete that you were referring to. |

Right - I didn't mention the de Mello version, because I assume it's an orchestrated instrumental.
The Advertiser had an article about her years back, which also mentioned "five" albums, so who knows?
Ain't Ortone's book great? |

Surprisingly, the de Mello version is an orchestrated vocal (LOL) done by Marjorie Espiritu. |
