Hey, Patrick! Will the Slack-keiki be a staple part of the show now?

I've thought of it, but it kinda gets to be a money/time off work issue. Limited time off, and limited funds to spend on vacation stuff. Next year I plan to RETIRE!!!! and the time off issue will resolve itself. I may take a part time job just to fund travel plans . So we can maintain the lifestyle Wanda & I would like to become acustomed to.Don't count me out from Swannanoa. Or from spending a week in California, for that matter. We may have a workshop of 2 students for you. Focusing on guitar and singing in olelo Hawai`i. If you saw me sing on YouTube, you can see I need lessons!

I've sent emails to the usual suspects (with so-so compliance on answering <G>), but would like to know asap who would be able to make it to a workshop with Patrick on Froday July 2nd.

*BUMP* --- Patrick will also be hosting a workshop in Bellevue WA the next day, Friday, July 3rd; details coming soon ---

Slack Key Guitar, Hula, Aloha and Country Swing??
The Patrick Landeza Project brings Hawaiian Music and Beyond to Kenmore’s Summer Concert Series

The sounds of aloha will surround the air in Kenmore with a Hawaiian show you will never forget, featuring “The Patrick Landeza Project!” The concert will kick off the FREE Kenmore Summer Concert Series on Thursday, July 2nd, at Saint Edward State Park from 6:00pm-8:00pm. For more information, contact the City of Kenmore at 425-398-3236 or the events page at www.cityofkenmore.com.

Composer, producer, teacher, and a leading exponent of the Hawaiian guitar style known as slack key, Patrick Kahakauwila Kamaholelani Landeza carries on the unique finger-picking method developed in the 19th century by Hawaiian cowboys, who loosened their guitar strings (or "slacked" them) for a lower, more resonant sound and developed new tunings to capture their unique feeling for the music.

Landeza’s ensemble features steel guitarist Patti Maxine, acoustic bassist Matt Bohn, and Rhan Wilson on percussion. The band highlights traditional Hawaiian music and slack key, with a touch of bluegrass, gospel and swing, replete with Patrick's warm aloha spirit and outrageous stories. Local hula dancers (from the Kiele Dance troupe) will complete the tropical scene.

Born to Hawaiian parents on what he calls "the island of Berkeley, California," Patrick cultivated his craft by studying slack key from masters like George Kuo, Dennis Kamakahi, Cyril Pahinui and the late Ray Kane and Sonny Chillingworth, who have all left their mark on Patrick’s traditional style of playing. Landeza has dedicated his life to sharing this art form with the world; he's the youngest recipient of the prestigious Kapalakiko Aloha Spirit award for his work as a producer and performer of slack key guitar. Patrick is also the founder of The Institute of Hawaiian Music and Culture, a traveling teaching institute that features some of Hawaii’s top musicians as instructors. Landeza is currently teaching High School in East Oakland, California, and juggles slack key tours and teaching throughout the United States and beyond.
