I've heard the song many times and always wondered where they got the idea for it and who they were listening to. They take it very seriously, though. It kind of sounds like something from Barry Flanagan.

Pat Simmons has lived up-country Maui for many years. Pretty good straight up Slack player.

This is on a CD collection called "Doobies' Choice" which is kind of a "band's favorites" compilation as an antidote to the obligatory record company "best of's" that often are chosen with no consultation from the artists.
Originally on their 1975(!)"Stampede" album, this is listed as one of Patrick Simmons's own favorites. Who am I to argue?

I had to laugh......this song was probably recorded before Berry Flanagan was born. Perhaps an influence on Hapa? Although you will note that Pat Simmons did not tune his guitar during the song....he he he.... As others said I never get tired of hearing it.

Patrick actually played that same song at a gig the Doobies did here in Honolulu the same year that video was shot, 1996.
