After the terrific tour with Hapa and John Cruz, Ledward Kaapana is hanging around Califrisco for a few, playing that Kalapana-style magic at various venues.
Last week he had his buddy Rodney Johnson open the show at 142 Throckmorton in Mill Valley. This is a great venue, and we saw several 'patchers there. Led's sister, Lehua, was in town and Led called her up for a couple of numbers to end the show.
The late addition to the tour was a fun Friday night in Sebastopol, at the Blue Sky Center, where Ross Randrup and friends build and sell electric vehicles. This is an amazing place to visit to see the creativity and imagination being unleashed, and the old Ford showroom is a pretty darned nice room for Hawaiian music as well.
I opened with a few songs, and we had some sweet hula from Na Huapala O Hula. Then Led rocked the house with ki ho`alu and leo kiekie up one side and down the other. He called Lehua out for a couple of duets, and all three of us finished up with a final number, "Black Sand."
Last night we began the last string of gigs with an evening at the Little Fox Theater in Redwood City. Another nice room with lots of enthusiastic Hawaiian music fans. Tonight we'll be at Don Quixote in Felton, and tomorrow we wind up at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley. This will be one of the last shows at this location, the long awaited new Freight will be open shortly. Led was one of the first performers at the old location, so it's wonderfully fitting that he be one of the last as well.

Aloha, Fran. You did a great job last night at Don Quixote's in Felton, Ca. Led seemed to be in a particularly good mood (probably due to the company he was keeping) and did what Led always does. Just amazes everyone with his playing and singing. And we had a packed house, which is always good to see on a Wednesday night. Can't wait to see you guys come back into town. It's never too soon. Have a great rest of the tour. |

Norm, that was one of the sweetest audiences I think I've ever seen. We were surprised to see a packed house on a Wednesday night, but beyond that the people were knowledgeable and so enthusiastic. I'm sure that big ovation Led got for just walking on stage had something to do with his good mood. The sound on stage was also quite good, which adds a lot to the performer's fun.

Hey Fran, the sound in the audience was pretty darn good also. Which added an awful lot to OUR fun as well. A hui hou. |

Fran,
So sorry we missed you and Led at DQ's, but we were in Mendocino at Lark Camp, playing with Kevin Brown and Robyn Kneubuhl, who were fantatstic in adding that sweet Hawaiian flavor to the otherwise crazy and whacky Lark Camp.
Whacky as in: bagpipes, hurdy-gurdys, fiddles, accordions, tubas, pianos, dulcimers, marimbas, and every other kind of musical instrument you can think of. Even guitars. All playing at once.
Hope we can catch you next time!
Julie

Eh, Julie, we all missed you (and your lovely stage decor). Led asked and I told him you were out in the woods with Kevin.
