Some of you may recall that I had a blast opening for the Mākaha Sons in Stratham, NH in September 2007. I have been invited to do it again this year and will be joined by Aloha Festivals Hawaiian Falsetto Singing Contest winner Bill Wynne and steel guitarist extraordinaire Chris Davis. We three East Coasters form Nā ʻElele, the messengers or ambassadors.

I am really looking forward to this. Hope to see you there. Please tell your New Hampshire and area friends, family, and fellow Hawaiian music fans about it! It will be an enjoyable and fun filled evening of Hawaiian music - a fundraiser with proceeds going to the Earth, Sea & Space Center of New Hampshire.

The concert will also benefit the Molly Fund. The event is coming together and shaping up to be a fun evening of Hawaiian music, all for the benefit of good causes. |

Sorry for the continued self-promotion, but I wanted to post the graphics just emailed to me. We won't perform Sopranos style, because Chris is from Connecticut, not New Jersey. |

Oh, dude! Let's cancel now while we still can. We can't possibly ever sound as good as we look.
(Be sure to print the poster first for a souvenir before they take us off of it.)

What a terrific package deal! Only $30.00 to see Nā ʻElele perform, plus you get to see the Makaha Sons for FREE . Nice poster--how come the Makaha Sons have more hair than Nā ʻElele ? You guys have a LONG drive from NJ/CT. If it's not too early in the season, you might be able to do some leaf peeping along the way--New Hampshire has spectacular foliage. Have a great concert!
Aloha, Doug |

Photoshop. The Makaha Sons have it, and Nā ʻElele needs it.
I am cracking up at this "hair" stuff. I have been complaing about my hair for 25 years - since high school - because I have so much of it I don't know what to do with it! It grows faster than my lawn, so I made a conscious decision to just... buzz it down like my lawn.
Andy, on the other hand... I should sell him some of mine.
But as long as we're talking about Photoshop, I want to glow eerily like the Sons. How can we make that happen? Maybe a drive out to Three Mile Island would be cheaper than Photoshop for us east coasters.

Sorry, the "Soul Glo" option was missing from my Photoshop toolbar.

Now THAT is what I'm talking about! You are the MAN!

Wonderful for you guys! I get the impression that you are all excited about the show. Since you have opened for them before, to be asked to do it again is quite a vote of confidence and a great compliment. Hope you have a great time and really slay 'em. (In a Hawaiian way of course!!) |

I am posting a brief follow up to last Saturday's show. For someone like me who has attended quite a few shows, it is a unique and valued opportunity to experience a show from a performer's perspective. Going through sound check, watching the Sons do their thing, and just hanging out. Since this is not something that I do regularly, I personally learn so much on stage in front of a captive audience. It is a vast contrast to the more typical background music during cocktail hour or backing hula dancers. Both are fun, but the former holds great promise that through osmosis I might pick up some gems from the the Mākaha Sons' 30+ years of performing experience. Overall, our 30 minute set was well received. I had great fun playing will Bill and Chris. Heck, our shirts looked good. I regret not making it to the lobby after the show but didn't feel a strong need since we didn't have merchandise to sell. Bill and I stayed in the theater meeting and chatting with some really cool people. We met many former NJ residents that appreciated our Hawaiian music efforts in the Garden State. One gentleman told us that he lived in Hawaiʻi and toured the world performing with Jimmy Borges. We talked story about all the musicians that he played with and saw including Kalapana and C&K. I met Kalani Kaowili, Ocean's brother, who welcomes and surfs the frigid New Hampshire waters. In my 15 minutes of fame, Al Kuahi Wong (who ran the Wahi Ku Moku - Boston Hawaiian Club for 15 years prior to his retirement) gave me a lilikoʻi cake, a recipe that he had recently perfected. So ʻono!!!
Margo Reola, who has opened here three consecutive years, did great. I met her when she was in high school. Now she is in college, a tremendous talent. The Sons were fantastic. Since the concert was a benefit for the Molly Fund, Molly Rowlee was a 5-year old cancer victim, and dedicated to the memory of Joan M. (Rogers) Sice - there was hardly a dry eye in the house once the Mākaha Sons made appropriate dedications and launched into I'll Remember You.
The people in New Hampshire were all amazing from the hosts to the audience. Mahalos to the organizers and congrats on a wonderful event. Thank you to Bill and Chris joining me on this adventure. For me, all worth the 10-12 hours of driving. |
