A neat idea. Imagine that you are simply minding your business going about your day in San Francisco, and the all of a sudden the people around you break out and do a spontaneous Hula. These are just a few of the samples found on youtube from this Saturday's "Hit And Run Hula" performances that Patrick Makuakane's Halau did this past Saturday.

I think Patrick deserves a lot of praise for doing this. I wonder how many people who have never really seen what Hula is all about will come away from their experience with some curiosity and the desire to learn more about it. What a great way to spread Aloha.

That was awesome! What a clever and creative way to spread the aloha spirit. I'm bummed I didn't get to see it live.

Aloha,
Doug

This is a very cool idea. I wonder if it was at all inspired by this?

Love that "Sound of Music" number -- look at all the smiles it elicited from onlookers!

Patrick Makuakane may indeed have been inspired by the NYC event, but (as usual) took it to a whole new level with his "hit & run" hula concept. He is soooooo creative and inventive with his dance numbers. He's got a big event coming in October which will feature ALL of his haumana -- so he's titled it "Ho`ike Nui" (funny!), and the guest musician will be Jerry Santos (yay!). Wish I could go....:

Saturday, October 17 - 8pm
Sunday, October 18 - 2pm
Director/Kumu Hula Patrick Makuakāne & Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu present:
Hawaiian Music Legend - Jerry Santos
Price: $35/$40 Reserved
Tickets on sale Wed, 7/22
Location: Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, San Francisco, CA
Info: CityBoxOffice.com / Tickets.com

We already have tickets for the Sunday show. I'm sure it will be a super event.

It is too bad that the videos were edited to cut off the scene just before the dancing starts (all except for the last one which shows maybe 1/2 second before the dancing starts). That takes the "Hit" out of the "Hit and Run" because the "Attack" has already started before the video.

I get the idea and it is cute, but obviously the video-editing person did not get it. The impact would have been much greater if the videos had started at least 5 or 10 seconds before the "Hit and Run" dancing started.

Howzit Slkho,

I was thinking the same thing, except that with my skill level I would have to call it "Hit or Miss" Slack Key .

Aloha,
Doug

For those that plan ahead, please note that Patrick Makuakane and his halau are scheduled to be at the 7th Annual Kapalakiko Newsletter Fundraiser in Newark, CA on Saturday; November 14, 2009; 4:00-9:00pm. If that's not enough, the headliner is Cyril Pahinui

Aloha Doug,
Good to hear from you, yeah Hit 'n Run Slack would be cool, even if was Hit 'n Miss, the public would love it. I usually pack my guitar when I take my dog to the park, and play while he runs around...people come by all the time to sit & listen...this could be the genisis to go more public, (dare I try the local mall, or street corner...minus the tip jar? hmmm?)
Aloha Mike, I thought you were still in Hawaii? Maybe I'll do Hit 'n Run at open mic, but I'm afraid I might just keep running, right by. I'll have to see.

Aloha Fran, how cool is that, that your already Hitting & Running with slack key...give me some examples on the where & how's that you've done, maybe I can get a couple of the fellas down to form a "slack posse" and try it.

Slack Key Snipers?

Basically my hit and run occurs when I take my sweetie shopping. She goes in the store, I sit outside and slack around. Doctor visits, hair appointments, etc. present additional opportunities.

It's not quite the same impact as having the "crowd" suddenly begin dancing a choreographed hula, but my solo hit and "walk don't run" generates its share of smiles.
