I had the pleasure of seeing Jerry Santos perform solo at the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku under the stars and trees. This was back in the early 90's when Keali'i was working there, before Kawaipunahele was recorded, and he organized a special fund raising concert series. Awesome!!!
PS..nice photo of Jerry you posted Wanda - thanks for sharing.

Speaking of Jerry Santos. Had the great pleasure of seeing him along with Kamuela Kimokeo, Wally Suenaga and Patrick Makuakane and his Halau "Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu", just yesterday in San Francisco. What a delightful event it was. Another great memory.

A couple weeks ago, someone asked about music on Maui and Oahu in mid October. There was no answer from the group, as I recall. I was disappointed as I was about to go to Maui in the same time frame. Not to worry!! We just had the greatest music experience in Maui last week. It started with my wife poring over the various magazines and papers and finding the Princess Kaiulani Scottish/Hawaiian festival on Saturday, Oct 17th in Kula with Ukeleles and Bagpipes, capped off by concerts from Uncle Richard Ho'opi'i and Hapa--all free. This was followed by the KE‘ALA‘ILIAHI 2009 With Halau Kekuaokala ‘Au ‘Ala ‘Iliahi at the Maui Cultural center with a tribute to Kumu Hula Keali'i Reichel, who performed an hour long concert as part of the show. Sunday was the annual Ukulele Festival, with concerts by Herb Ohta Sr (Ohta-san), Richard Ho'opi'i, the Hula Honeys, and a rock band Kanekoa, which featured a young guy named Vince Esquire. They opened their set by shredding a Dead song on Ukes--Awesome. This was also free!
Monday we went to Ha'iku to see the Hula Honey's dinner show at the Hana Hou Cafe and were treated to something really special. Robyn Kneubuhl's mother, Emma Veary, was there and performed a mele with Robyn and Ginger. If you don't know, as I didn't, she is one of the treasures of Hawai'i. A classic singer who defined the Hawai'ian music of the 50's and 60's.
All in all, if you look, there is awesome entertainment to be found all around the Islands.
Aloha and Mahalo to all the great artists of Hawai'i
Allen
