I was interested in how many differences there are in a very well known mele and decided to check out You Tube to see for myself how differently people play Hi`ilawe.
In addition to that, this song has brought many people together and has really profoundly affected my life. And not just me - so many other Taro Patch folks who have had the pleasure of meeting Duke and Jay and playing music with them. Additionally, through the You Tube venue, so many new friends have been made and so many people are now playing music together.
So that one song, aside from praising Waipi`o and telling the story of the love affair and all the chattering birds who talk gossip, it has had a great power in bringing people together.
A powerful song in so many ways.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ysr0c4rmYTA This is the Hi`ilawe that endeared me to Duke and Jay forever! This was a magic piece of music that touched hearts way across the ocean. And I am not the only one this touched. /See, over 7800 folks have listened to it. When I miss Duke and Jay, I go back to it, so probably 5,000 of those hits are from me!

Indeed. I wonder if somebody on the patch - you know, like somebody who is friends with da bass playah - might know who the guitarist/singer is? They could always pass word to someone else here, if they need to preserve their anonymity ... |

At the suggestion of Dr. Amy Ku`uleialoha Stillman, I have updated this study on "Hi`ilawe". First of all, I compiled a You Tube playlist of videos featuring the mele. Additionally, I have revised the listing shown above, removing links that were inaccurate (turns out I duplicated links twice) or have been taken down. I find it fascinating to hear all the different ways that "Hi`ilawe" is performed both musically and in the hula for it.
This is the new list of "Hi`ilawe" videos: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0CDF49E9CAB22C1D&feature=mh_lolz
This is the update list from above:

I won't say his name (cause of the Witless Relocation Program), but the bass playah is a beloved TP'er (and he IS one swell playah!) |

Yes, I miss that bass playah, Retro. Don't say his name -- you going get scolding. Could the guy making the music be from the Camacho family? I think that is their name. |

A version that I particularly like is that of Kanilau. For those who know music theory, I like how they creatively perform the first occurrence of each verse in the relative minor key, then have a quick V7 chord in the major key we would all expect, and then sing it again in that key. Very clever. |
