The Honolulu International Film Festival will run October 15-25. Various films and times at Dole Cannery Cinemas; Hawai`i Theater and Sunset on the Beach at Waikiki.
Of great controversy is a film to debut at the festiva, Barbarian Princess, October 16 at 8 p.m. at the Hawai`i Theater. Cost $15 and $25. This is the controversial film about Princess Ka`iulani.. There has been plenty of debate on the title. There has been plenty debate on the historical accuracy of the film. . The film makers say that some think they are callig the Princess barbaric, but they are calling it that, remembering what others called her in the past. UH Manoa professor Puakea Nogelmeier volunteered as a cultural consultant for the film and said it does the monarchy justice.
I would love to see it. Cannot wait until it is available on DVD so I can see for myself first hand if it is pono or not. One thing to remember is that at that time in history a lot of injustices, stereotypes and outright ignorance made for plenty of not pono situations. This film is bound to stir plenty discussion.
I would love to hear from anyone who goes to see the film and hear what you thought of it. I am sure there will be stuff in the newspaper that we can read.
