A customer of mine recently gave me an old green Nick Maniloff bar. I gave it to Slipry1 for his collection. Years ago I had a cream colored bar. I think that it was a Maniloff. It had worn down so that it was leaving white dust on the Dobro. Someone gave me an old Stevens bar and Neeej gave me a cool Stevens type bar with a bullet nose. (Bluegrass habits die hard.) Anyone have any experience with non metal bars?

| Well, I've never been into metal (too loud, can't hear yourself drink), but I like some of the biker bars. Singles bars have lots of hot chicks, but too many horny guys. IMHO at your age, you and slipry1 should stay away from bars of all kinds, except for perhaps an occasional Milky Way of Almond Joy |

I've heard of ceramic bars, but haven't seen one yet.I used the neck of a Galliano bottle for playing blues a long time ago. I like the sound of glass, but it cracked when I was removing it from the bottle,and after dropping it several times, it took on a different configuration and wouldn't stay on my finger anymore. I do have a bone one I made at Deer Camp one year, while butchering someones deer. Leg bone has a nice sound, too, but it really isn't long enough for multiple strings. Also, because both ends are open, it might not work well when tilting up. I'm finding light weight to be an advantage for me. Much less hand fatigue.

Paul, I had a glass bottleneck, but it broke also. Now I have a brass one. Don't play much Blues anymore, especially during this season. |

| As for ceramic bars, they seem to have been the rage back in the 40's. They're actually not pure ceramic - they have a brass core with a ceramic coat around them. They give a softer sound, imho, than steel, but they don;t take a lot of punsihment. I dropped my blue baby (the magical one) and it devloped a chip, so I've retired it! There seems to be a red pure ceramic one that I see on e-bay, but I've never tried it. |
