I am traveling to Waikoloa, HI next week oct 12-22nd 2009
I am learning Slack key and uke hawaiian style.
I was wondering if there is a good local place to rent a guitar and uke. Also, is there a local Kanikapila I can sit in on and/or someone I can take lessons from.
I am beyond the beginner level so I would need more then the basics.
All of this to say. I do not see a forum to discuss opportunities to learn and play while traveling. So I thought I would be the first to open a forum for that topic.

There are 2 Taropatch.net members you may want to contact. Bob Stouffer (Kona Bob on TP)who is one of the organizers of a kanikapila held weekly at Keauhou Shopping Mall either on Wednesday or Thursday evenings. I'm sure you could find someone for ukulele lessons there as many kanikapila attendees play the ukulele.Chances are that they'd share their mana'o (knowledge)manuahi (for free!)
For slack key lessons contact TP member Don Kaulia. If he cannot supply personal slack key lesson himself I'm positive that he could steer you in the right direction or maybe hook you up with someone.

You can also contact Keoki Kahumoku. He is a very good slack key teacher, lives in Hilo, but wanders to other parts of the island on a regular basis.

...and he's here in the Seattle area this weekend, D. He's with Brittni Paiva & Charles Michael Brotman in Tacoma Sunday night, and might make it to The Triple Door for Willie K's free gig Saturday. |

Was going to mention Keoki Kahumoku too but last I heard he was having some health issues. Glad to know he's obviously resolved it |

Instead of a rental, I'd suggest first going to Costco in Kailua-Kona and see if they have acoustic guitars or ukes. They'd be pretty inexpensive if they have them. Our Costco carries a Silvertone (I think) for under $100. Not a great rig, but... They also used to sell inexpensive Ukes at Long's drugs in Kailua-Kona. Anyway, donate them to a school when you leave. Might be cheaper and better than renting. Kona Bob (TP) may be able to help or comment on this. |

I looked into rental in Kailua-Kona a couple years ago when I was there and the cost was worse than I expected. As I recall it was going to be about $300 for a Takamine Jasmine for a couple weeks. For less than rental you can either buy a small guitar that will fit in the overhead on the plane, or follow the previous advice and buy one at Costco and donate it when you leave. |
