Aloha All, Just a reminder that the "Southern California Slack Key Festival" for 2010 will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2010. Diana and I traveled all the way from Northern California to attend the Southern California Slack Key Festival in 2008 and 2009. We are really looking forward to going again in 2010. The venue is first class, with really good sound and there are no bad seats. The lineup of talent has been terrific and we enjoyed the performances immensely. We would recommend this event to anyone who can possibly make it as it is one not to be missed. For tickets, or if you have questions, you can reach Mitch Chang through Kala Koa Entertainment at this website: http://campaign.constantcontact.com/render?v=001zHmPEHN4waPLSs7DxaxhRgGdddfB9gvtpeRvaKNxoU3qiZJOMTAj8Y8JrfXWPFkWR7s6WKMK3zXKJM9x2Ln5ndi-eLW_5RHPcQUVevxtgshRSIoRVdH8YB1qVdgM_nAEMUhZ9ayqaia_pY0MLRi9Yw%3D%3D Please make plans to attend this wonderful afternoon of Hawaiian Slack Key. I hope to see many taropatch faces in the crowd. Jerry

Yup! Jerry's right you all, its a great show & venue...Mitch does a numba one show!!!! For all you slack show/festival veterans, you don't need to be reminded, but all you "Newbies" out there, it truly is worth going to. You will be amazed, inspired, and motivated...meet the performers, network with other slack key people, and just plain have a good 'ol time. Its up, (or down) in Redondo Beach, and is very close, (short drive) to many local style eateries... fun & yum...who can beat that?!!! If you miss it, your going to hear a lot of..."Man!, did you go the Slack Key Festival...what?!! No?!!! ahhh dude, you missed a great show!!!..." Now, you don't want to hear that, do you? ~slkho |

Pua, I'll be displaying my work at this venue...Mitch has been so gracious to have my work up on stage as part of the stage decorations. I'm working (like a busy little elf) on some new designs, some old favorites, and all are for sale if anyone out there would like a one-of-a-kind fine art piece to purchase. In addition, there'll be fish hooks, and mini ipus's for sale. These go quite quickly as I only make them once-a-year, sorry no commission pieces. Some of my best work to date...I wish I could play slack key as good as my artwork...ha ha ha ~slkho |

Andy! It will be so good to see you!!! Do you want a ride to Kaisen in Oceanside on Tuesday? If we go together, we get to use the carpool lane (that would be HOV for those of you on the east coast, I think) Kaisen was really nice last week. The regulars are sounding very professional! Mahalo for the nice time. See thread for workshops. Aloha! |

Hi everybody! Here is the Slack Key Festival Update:
* Andy Wang will be here!
* Kimo and I went down to the Taylor factory last week and checked out some really neat prototypes! An 8-string baritone (3rd and 4th strings are doubled) and cutaway parlor guitar that I personally was lusting after. It was loud! We headed over to Kaisen's after that and had a ball hanging with Mike, Terry, and Bill
* VIP Reception is SOLD OUT. If you're on the guest list, here's a preview: prizes to be won include tiki art, a Baby Taylor guitar, subscriptions to Hawaii and Acoustic Guitar magazines, autographed copies of Stories of Aloha signed by the author, a Royal Chess Set, Trader Vic's tiki mugs and more!
* Special surprise (not anymore though) appearance by Amy Hanaiali'i! She will be performing a few numbers with Jeff Peterson who is a regular member of her band
* The "Spirit of Aloha" Benefit Drawing will help raise funds and awareness for the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad CA. Enter to win a trip for 2 to Hawaii - airfare, an island activities package and 3 nights at the Hilton Waikoloa and the Marriott Waikoloa Resort & Spa!!! www.spiritofalohadrawing.com
* Performers will be staying at the Marriott Residence Inn on Sepulveda Blvd in Manhattan Beach. If you're traveling from out of town you should consider staying there. Not only will you get a great price when you mention the Festival and enjoy free breakfast and wi-fi, you'll also be helping the cause and will have the chance to talk story a little more with the guys
* Cyril is doing a free live in-store performance at Amoeba Music in Hollywood on the 23rd at 2pm.
* Workshops with Jeff Peterson and Cyril Pahinui (see Nancy's posts)
* Tickets are disappearing, only abut 500 more left. That may sound like a lot but considering it's appearing on websites for Hawaii magazine, Guitar Player magazine, Acoustic Guitar magazine, in the papers all over the South Bay and L.A., plus flyers and posters all over the place, they'll be gone come the day of the show. www.kalakoa.com |
