The multi-talented Evan Tom and his band (Uncle Marc on guitar and my buddy Joe Ho on ‘ukulele) will be the host band at Temple Bar’s Aloha Sunday Luau Buffet and Open Mic this Sunday, Nov. 1: http://www.templebar.org/Aloha%20Sun1.html . At only 15 years old, Evan is one of the most talented young musicians in the Bay Area. Not only is he an ‘ukulele wiz, but he is very proficient on the guitar, steel guitar, and bass.
Evan and the band always put on a great show. He does all of the arranging, and I look forward to seeing his song choices (Hawaiian and other genres) and creative interpretations. He can dazzle you with his fast finger picking and strumming, but he can also slow things down and play a sweet ballad for us old futs too. Here are some YouTube clips:

- “I Fell in Love with Honolulu”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMBMuILSTVM&NR=1 - “How D’Ya Do” (Evan on steel guitar): http://www.youtube.com/user/takmele17#p/u/2/A1Ez5yzVXBE
The Temple Bar is a wonderful local-style restaurant and a fixture on the Bay Area Hawaiian music scene. The open mics are really fun and delightfully unpredictable, the crowd is very supportive and full of aloha, and there’s excellent impromptu hula too. I’ll be playing slack key at the open mic this Sunday.
If you are planning to go, I highly recommend making reservations and arriving at the restaurant by 3:30P to get good street parking. Last year, Evan and the band played to a packed house, and when I was last there two months ago, it was also a packed house with Uncle Kaala Carmack as the featured entertainer. Open mic starts around 5:00P when the band takes a break to eat dinner. Hope to see you there.
Aloha, Doug
