You Tube – week of November 29, 2009
Before you watch the videos, go mark your calendar. August 7, 2010 is the date for the Gabby Pahinui Waimanalo Kanikapila. If can, I believe Paul and I should be there for it. Duke, Jay, Derek, Shawn, Zack – you guys up for it?
Also – make sure you check out Amy Ku`ulei Stillman’s blog this week. Topic: Viintage Reissues at: http://amykstillman.wordpress.com/2009/11/29/vintage-reissues-1/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+HawaiianMusicForListeningPleasure+%28Hawaiian+Music+for+Listening+Pleasure%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

I can see someone’s head facing away from the camera, over on the right front of the frame – taking video. I wonder if that was Kawika? According to Cyril and Chelle, there will be a kanikapila in Waimanalo in 2010. If they need help with it, I want all you guys pitch in, give plenty kokua. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nraBGUalUyw&NR=1

That "Wai O Ke Aniani" is the Bell Records version (1947 or so) with Joe Diamond and Ralph Alapai of Andy Cummings' Hawaiian Serenaders. The same person has also posted the Bell sessions "Hula Medley," but I highly recommend getting the Cord International History of Hawaiian Slack Key compilation, which includes all four of Gabby's Bell sides, plus the Aloha Records "Hi`ilawe" from around the same period, plus lots of other early material and detailed notes by Jay Junker, Harry Soria, Jr., and George Winston.

Since the HSGA Hawaii convention is biennial, I'm relly thinking about coming over in August, especially now that I've met Cyril. |

Jack - I think August sounds like a grand time to go. Maybe we can rent that place over by Doug Fitch and we all stay there togeddah and I can cook and it would be plenty cheaper, and maybe we only need rent one car. Send me private message if you like think about it. |
