Wandering through the accessories section of the local Guitar Center, I ran accross this:
At only $10 bucks more than a Vox DA5, the Vox DA20 was a no-brainer! From the top, the control layout is familiar to those that already own the Vox DA5's. What's different is a much larger cabinet and a solid handle:
Here's an angled view of the top and back. Notice the Vox DA20 has a built in AC power supply with a standard power cord, instead of the AC adaptor used on the Vox DA5:
This is a closer view of the controls from the top:
Looking at the back, you'll notice a 1/4" microphone input and a microphone volume control. You can plug an MP3 player into the AUX in, a microphone into the MIC input and an instrument into the top input. What this means is you can play and sing along to your MP3 tunes all at the same time!:
After taking off the back panel, you now see the two 8" speakers and the battery compartment for 6 C cell alkaline batteries:
Playing impressions:
I started out with an American Standard Fender Stratocaster. The DA20 effectively reproduced the lower notes, that seem to plague the smaller battery powered amps. I had the power switch on MAX, which is 5 watts on battery power and 20 watts on AC power. These tests were performed on battery power. I did some power chording playing Jumpin' Jack Flash, some power riffing playing Riff Raff, a power blues shuffle playing Zep's Rock 'n Roll some pentatonic blues scales and then the Carter Scratch to Wildwood Flower for an articulation check. The DA20 passed with flying colors on all of the tests.
Next, I played Hanalei Moon and Sophisticated Hula on my Ovation Applause UAE20 acoustic/electric soprano ukulele, followed by a 12 bar blues shuffle to Kansas City. Then I fingerpicked Hiilawe. All the above yielded a very natural sound.
In all the above tests, the volume was impressively loud and clear. Just for fun, I plugged the DA20 into AC and played Hey Joe with the Strat. With local noise level ordinances, the DA20 would do well live on stage with a power trio.

I have a DA5 and use it sometimes with my travel guitar. I use my travel guitar (Aria Sinsonido-nylon) around the house, with and without headphones, quite a lot more BTW so the DA5 is not powered up often. It is a great little travel amp but the DA20 does look a more versatile although a little larger and heavier. I wonder how the battery life has changed?

On the 5 watt setting this amp has an amazing amount of acoustical output. It's a busking lead guitarist's dream. |
