As for the other instrument, I wonder if there could ever be a (musical) use for it that would NOT be described as "exotic." Thanks for the Sunday treat, Bob. |

...wait, I thought you said Erotic Use of the Lap Steel.
This is almost as devo as the German New Age banjo CD I heard once. Still trying to forget that one...

Run, don't walk, to rent the movie "Theremin: an Electronic Odyssey." The story is far stranger than anything you can imagine. Suffice it to say both the KGB and Brian Wilson are involved
And you will not believe the virtuosity of Clara Rockmore. It is a real instrument.
Roll over Beethoven, indeed! |

I saw that film in the theater a few years ago (and have almost bought the DVD a couple of times, through one of my favorite bargain sources); I still have "The Virtuosity of Clara Rockmore" LP. |

Just for kicks, have you seen the Theramin-ator? it's the theramin app for the iPhone. Imagine the possibilities if you assembled a group of musicians playing the iPhone Ukulele app, the Ocarina app, T-Pain's Autotuner app and the Theramin-ator and.... er... best forget that.
Beam me up Scotty, there's no intelligent life down here. |

I suppose at this point I should confess that I have actually got a Theremin. I've not tried to play it, not having a suitable working amplifier, but I reckon it wouldn't take me too long to get some sort of tune out of it. It's on my ever expanding list of 'things to get around to when I've got a bit more time'. |

Hey Bob! I'm hoping to come to Camp in February 2011. And I'm very much looking forward to seeing you again, and having fun playing. However, I certainly wasn't thinking in terms of Theremin! Tell you what, though, If in a year's time I have 1)Got my act together, 2)Learnt how to play the thing (which I suspect is the 'hard part') and 3)Worked how to explain to the Customs and Exise officials what a Theremin is, and how no, I don't intend to use it in an explosive device.
At the moment, the only way I would wow anyone with my talent is to make them think "Wow, that sounds terrible! When's this idiot going to shut up and go back to England!" |

In that case, be sure not to play it for them. It may not explode, but a theremin in the wrong hands is a WMD.
However, if you do bring it, I will bring my fiddle... which I have played all of three months.

Aahhh, da fiddle, an instrument that has thwarted me these many years. In my hands, the fiddle IS a WMD! |

At least youse guys know the proper name for it. Our fiddle-playing daughter uses the slang term-VIOLIN! But at least she has fun playing it. Unko Paul |
