There are some real treats this week. Scroll down, down and you will find a series of videos from 1994. They are a special edition of Hot Hawaiian Nights - the 1994 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards nominees. A secret surprise. Segment #4 has Iz, Mel Amina and Roland Cazimero singing Nohili E.

But there are plenty other swell music videos, including the two I am starting off with. My sweeties, Duke, Shawn and Derek, making some of the best music you would ever hear walking down the street in Palolo. I think Derek is the engineer. You guys are the best, you know Auntie likes to brag on you.

You Tube, week of January 31, 2010

Duke, Derek and Shawn – Pua Hone. I’m not going to rave about how very good they are. I’m going to let you hear it for yourself.

Here’s my boys Duke, Shawn & Derek playing “Waiulu”, Aunties favorite, favorite love song. Shawn is playing bass! Duke is playing some way swell slack key and Derek, oh boy, he makes that 12-string sound so nice, and his vocals – well, let’s just say there are bunches of wet Kleenex in the trash can. Mahalo piha for this.

Ah well, `Alika, ah, ummm, well, the `ukulele playing? It is about where it was a while back. Two chords. No much practice. After winter is over, I promise to practice more. Wintertime makes my fingers dry and cracked regardless of how much lotion I use. Hard to play with cracked and bleeding fingers, Hard for my card making, too. I neva like get blood on my valentines.

I am a practice scofflaw.

But why would I even want to when you get Jay or Justin or Terry or Duke or Shawn or Derek or Abrigos or Uncle Ron or Uncle Braddah or Petah or Jonathan....etc., etc., etc.

Kden, Braddah Ed. You wen shame me. I going chrai practice today. As soon as I can figure what to do about my cracked finahz. Yow. Soah. I wen buy some white cotton gloves fo grease da fingahz den put da gloves fo treatment purposes. Maybe it going werk. I just need new climate. Az all.

If we get the Doctor to prescribe a change of climate, will the insurance help pay for a small place in Hawai`i? i got no problem with change of scenery. By Thanksgiving I'm usually tired of winter already.

For those who enjoyed Duke, Derek & Shawn playing "Waiulu", you might be interested in this little snippet of Clyde "Kindy" Sproat talking story about the mele. http://www.mele.com/hawaiianMP3s/2991_09.mp3 This is from his 2004 CD release, Na Mele Kupuna, which I think is one of the best all time ever Hawaiian recordings in our collection. The talk story is invaluable history.

I can't wait to hear you play/sing, even if it isn't much. I'm sure you're better than you think you are. I think all musicians are talented in their own right, regardless of their skill levels. I support everybody who tries to keep music alive and well. I don't know what life would be like without it.

FYI, the first song i taught mhyself was "He Po Lani Makamae." If you disregard all the key changes and just play it in C the whole way through, it only uses C and G7.

He kehau ho'oma'ema'e ke aloha.
