Is this an on line Kani? I don't know much about this web stuff, rendesvous1840 is more than a handle, it's a way of thinking. Unko Paul |

Yup, do you guys have skype? If so, feel free to give me your skype name so I can add you. Skype is basically an instant messenger program but instead of typing messages to people you can actually talk to them like you're talking on the phone except it's through the computer. That's how we'll be doing this. |

alika,
How will you get around the speed of light problem?
The delay from west coast to Hawaii is bearable, but the delay back to the east might upset the rhythm of folks trying to play together.
New York to Honolulu ~= 5000 miles / 186,000 miles per second = 27mS one-way or 54mS roundtrip delay, which is tolerable for slow tunes. However, the electrical network (skype) path distance and buffering delays are likely to double or triple this time, possibly resulting in enough delay to cause problems with real-time music (especially if there are any satellite links involved).
This has been a classic problem with long distance real-time music jamming ever since the invention of the telephone. If everyone is within just a few thousand miles the problem is usually bearable.
There is a network jamming system called NinJam that solves this long distance delay problem by having people play on "delayed cycles". (google NinJam)
Good luck with your experiment!

I was thinking about the possibility that we might sound like we're playing at different tempos, but we'll all do our best and see how it goes. Sometimes people tell me that it sounds delayed on their end when I play/sing with them but I tell them it doesn't sound like that on my end. We'll see. |

Your google must have directed you to the wrong places. Ninjam works on all versions of Windows, and many have used it on XP. There are a few hiccups with Win7-64 bit at the moment but Win7 32 bit works fine (so far as I know), as well as OSX. However, getting it setup and finding a suitable server are both non-trival. It may not be your cup of Tea (or Kava).
If you use the Cockos provided server you have to participate in their groups, but any reliable server can be used (according to the Users Forum).
Here is the Reaper NinJam Users Forum location:
http://forum.cockos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=10
Anyway, good luck with your Skype experiment.

Sounds over my head. I don't think we have Skype. At least, it's never come up in conversation here. But theres a lot of stuff on the 'puter I don't recognize. Unkp Paul |

In conjunction with Lawrence's comments, I have been involved in a project that used Skype to provide real time video guidance for blind people. With this system we invariable experienced a 1-3 second delay between the audio and the visual. In using the system within the same space (where one could hear the real and transmitted audio) there was a 0.5 second or so delay. This might make for some interesting music--maybe realtime looping. Good luck. We had to give up on Skype due to bandwidth issues and a lot of dropped calls. Aloha, Allen |

I could not agree with that sentiment more.
If one of the participants can keep a good slow steady beat, then the others may be able to add melodies that will fit. It would end up working kind of like a round like "row-row-row-your-boat".
I will not be joining, since I do not have broadband at home (in spite of being a computer engineer, it is a long story).
Again - good luck and have fun.

Last night, Alika in Maine and I (here in Kona, Hawaii) did a Skype kanikapila - Just the two of us. We kept it simple, and it went quite well. Alika has a nice voice, and she played several songs on her 'ukulele. It sounded fine on my end. I played the steel guitar, and Alika did notice a slight delay, but it was workable. Little Grass Shack worked just fine. Those of you who live far from other musicians should consider installing Skype on your computer. It's free, and no harder to figure out than a microwave oven.
