At 6 am, the sirens started going off here in Kona. Chile had an 8.8 last night and there is a 10' wall of water headed our way. It is supposed to reach Hawaii between 11 am and noon.

Well, I live at 1300 ft, so no worries here, but I hope my friends down makai get out of the way.

I also hope the electricity and internet stay up!

Sheesh!
Aloha,
-Konabob

Yeah Bob, stay high! Here in Santa Cruz we've got a warning in effect. Supposed to hit about the same time as you in Hawaii. Supposed to be pretty mild in the Monterey Bay areas, but noticeable on the actual exposed coastal areas.

Cheers

No`eau called us from O`ahu this morning - they are ok (but they still stocked up on a few things from the store ... just in case).

Looking pretty good here at 12:30 local time. Fascinating discussion by one of the Tsunami Warning Center guys about the relationship between wave frequency and the resonant frequency defined by coastline geometry - the 1960 Hilo disaster occurred because the timing of the waves exactly matched the resonant frequency of Hilo Bay, so each ensuing wave added its force to the one before.

In the current event the waves are coming relatively rapidly, so they interfere with each other and attenuate instead of summing. But because the coastline is so varied there's no way to predict if some set of conditions will give rise to a deadly wave, which is the reason for extending the alert for several hours.

Checked in with family early this morning. They got some supplies, just in case. So far, so good.

Isles appear to have been spared

Hey Andy, O'ahu was spared by the tsunami Warning. It was like a ghost town on Saturday. Hopefully everything is going well on your end.

For folks in Hawai`i: I just saw on Twitter that a friend and his family are donating the extra groceries that they purchased (in advance of possible tsunami damage) to their church's food bank.

What a fantastic idea, and one that ought to be circulating far and wide.
