Aloha! Palaina in Vegas here! Kalihi boy, so I can get downright moke! I took beginner kihoalu lessons at Kamehameha Schools Adult Education classes long time ago, and learned to play Hi'ilawe in open G. Lost da book and lost touch with playing. I'm starving for learning again! I'm ready for the long haul now! (And make new friends!)

Aloha Palaina! You guys in Henderson, NV get choke good music ova dea. We went one time for see Dennis Kamakahi, Cyril Pahinui, Patrick Landeza and Gary Haleamau (who lives there by you guys). We went all the way from Ohio. Was worth every minute.
You may be proof of what I have often said about the music. Be exposed to it, have it around you and some day, som day you going come back to the roots. That's why the keiki need to heart the traditional music of Hawai`i. So it will be an everday thing to them and they will feel good about it.
Doesn't hearing songs like "Ku`u Home o Kahulu`u" make those who moved from the islands wistful when they hear it? Tugs at your heart.
Come talk story, and if you get, put some videos on You Tube to share your music. Welcome to Taro Patch.

Howzit Palaina,
Welcome to da 'Patch. When did you take ki ho'alu classes at Kamehameha Adult Ed? That's where I first learned, a long time ago. Ron Loo taught the beginner class and George Kuo taught the advanced class.
Glad to hear you're getting back into slack. Way more resources and workshops now. Definitely hook up with Bruddah Duke. He's an awesome traditional player and knows plenty nice licks.
Aloha, Doug

Bruddah Duke! Homie! I grew up on Gertz Lane/Gulick Avenue, accross da street from Naga's Store! Went to Kalihi-Waena Elem., Kalakaua Int., and grad Farrington 1980! Remember Mynah Lee's purple house? Atta Isaac's house a couple blocks away. I miss Tasty Chop Suey! Used to play down by da river and get dirty lickin's wen we got home. Hahd head boy! High School time I wen work bag boy at P&P Super Foods. I neva saw so much green banana and kalo! Good fun time back den! Eh! PearlCityBoy! Fo da life of me I cannot remember wen I went, but Ron Loo wuz da kumu. I lost my Beginner's book by him, and the tabs for Hi'ilawe in Open G taropatch dat he handed out to us. Da mosquitos up in dem hills was pretty ferocious too boy! On da bright side, I found dis place, and what a blessing it is! Auntie Wanda and Duke are awesome, is all I can say! |
