I love my egg beater. It is so much easier than hauling out the mixer, either the hand mixer or the Kitchen-Aid. Wonder why these have fallen out of style nowadays? You never see them in the stores anymore.

With the movement afoot to a greener, more environmentally responsible lifestyle, I'll bet there are all kinds of other gadgets that don't use electricity or otherwise harm the environment that should have a come back. Can you think of any?
I remember as a kid down in W. Va., there was a gadget that was used to kill flies and wasps. It probably was full of DDT at that time, but it was not aerosol. It had like a screw on lid and a long handle that you pumped up with air to shoot the bug juice. I think it was called flit for something like that. A knife can be used many times instead of hauling out the food processor. It just takes a little more time. To me, it is often not worth the hassle of hauling out the food processor and then worse yet, cleaning it after use with all those pieces, when a simple knife and some time will get you where you want to go.
I can't even believe I am saying this because I have probably every kitchen gadget you can think of -- fondue pot, electric wok, coffee grinder, pasta machine, bread machine, ice cream machine, etc.

Wasn't that egg beater the grand prize in the Lolo Telethon? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rNI-cM_OGc (about 2:48 in) . Wow, brings back memories.

you know by using that you work your body harder which causes you to breathe harder which in turn sends more CO2 onto the air. |

I'm not sure about the chemistry, Derek. I think I'd be exhaling C02 anyhow, but it is better than methane which two of my dear bolo-head hanai braddahs dispense into the air.
Doug, that video of Rap was funny as can be. I wouldn't give up my egg beater for a prize, though. I'd rather give bucks for lolos. |

Eh, Wanda. I use a whisk or a fork. I have minimalist tendancies. |

I agree, anything that relies on electricity is in danger of becoming a useless pile of junk someday when there's not enough electricity, or we gotta stop using it. or after some world war or natural disaster
no matter what happens, you will be able to beat eggs.. unlike the guy with an electric mixer..
i've always used chopsticks though
but i like all those old tools, especially the old hand drills and saws, and planes, and all that stuff that no one uses any more.. especially furniture making / wood working equipment.

Eh, Aunty. I use a fork to beat my eggs. If I have a bunch, I use a whisk. Yes, I also use a clean bowl. |

Being a southpaw, a lot of hand implements are a problem because they're right handed. I like your egg beater, Auntie, because it's ambidextrous (Latin for having two right hands, btw). My oldest daughter sent me a whole bunch of kitchen implements (yes, knives are ground so the results of chopping fall away from the knife if you use your right hand - and into the knife if you use your left hand). I STILL cannot make the left handed can opener work! It's fun to leave out when I'm cooking with friends. |

Out of necessity, I have learned to use most kitchen implements the right handed way, oddawise, they no work so good.
An offset spatula is a wonderful tool, as well. |

I usually use whatever I can find to beat the eggs with. I'm a leftie too so I get hard time with certain tools too. But I get 'um!
Btw Auntie what is a fondue maker? is that what they make the little dumplings with? (or it that mondue? mondoo?) Sorry, if it's not related to the spam, poke, or canned corned beef and onion family I probably haven't eaten it. =) Have a good weekend Auntie! |

All a fondue maker is, Sam, is an electric pot to melt cheese in for dunk a chunk of bread. Is ono, but way too specialized of a tool. Can melt cheese any old way, but it was quite the trend a while back. Is kinda like Mongolian Hot Pot or Shabu-shabu, because you can do more with fondue than just melt cheese -- can heat oil and stick meat or mushrooms or veggies and deep fry da buggahs.
When I come O`ahu I going cook you guys some jambalaya -- shrimp, hot sausage, chicken, ham, crabmeat -- going broke da mout. I chrai keep Unko Paul away from poke or lomi salmon. He does not need raw fish.
I make ono laulau too, Sam. Oni need the ti leaves, but I can make them mainland style, too, in aluminum foil - fake kine. |

Ha! I'll get poke some way. I can find a store & buy it if nothing else. Last time we drove down the coast from windward side I bought some from a truck parked by the road. Lau lau & poke. MMmmm. Unko Paul |

Lol! Sometimes I do the foil lau lau action here too! Fake or not, still ono! Or the liquid smoke pork butt in the oven for kalua pig action! jambalaya sounds good though. Used to have a place here on Dillingham that used to make jambalaya. They had crab and clambake, all kine. But they closed. So there went my Gumbo fix! =) |
