there was a contract job opening for the telephone company and there was a Samoan contractor, a Japanese contractor, and a Portagee contractor who all wanted the job
the telephone company told them they would give them a test and the one who wins would get a very big contract worth millions of dollars with the phone company.
the man at the phone company explained that each contractor could have a team of helpers, and each team would get 30 25-foot long telephone poles, and that the poles needed to be placed 50 feet away from each other, and the poles must all be running in a straight line, and each pole must be put into a hole dug 5-feet deep. The first team to successfully place all 30 telephone poles in the ground in a straight line would get the job.
so the 3 contractors set off with their teams.
the first team, the Samoans, worked as fast and as hard as they could, digging each hole by hand, one Samoan could dig one hole and place the pole all by himself, so the team of 5 guys was doing 5 poles at a time, and they even had time for some quick naps.
By the time the Samoan team got back to the head office, they had been out just 4 hours, and had placed 30 poles in a fairly straight line. almost 50 feet apart, with some variance. The representative from the phone company was very impressed with their strength and power and speed
the Japanese contractor took a different approach, his team of 12 men first surveyed the land, made markings and measurements, spend most of the morning setting up the dig sites, etc.. then they brought in some heavy machinery to help dig the holes, and some other machinery to lift the poles up and place them in the ground. each pole was carefully aligned to perfection. they stopped only occasionally for tea
By the time the Japanese team got back to the head office, they had been out 7 hours, but all 30 poles were aligned perfectly, in a perfectly straight line, exactly 50 feet apart each. they were very proud of their work. the representative was very impressed with their engineering skill and precision.
the Portagee contractor took yet another approach, they were going to win with sheer manpower. they brought in 35 workers, the workers were divided into 5 sub-teams, and each sub-team had an overseer. each team had a different task, they worked without rest, placing each pole at the exact distance apart, and to the exact depth specified, making the sure the poles were aligned evenly.
by the time the Portagee team got back to the head office, they had been out 18 hours. The representative was very polite but told them that the portagee team could go home, they were no longer needed because of the time it took them to complete their task. he explained that the Japanese team had competed their task in 1/2 of the time, and the Samoans even faster.
The Portagee foreman, now very angry, shouted: "eh, thos otha teams neva even do da job right, try go look - dey poles still stay sticking outta da ground"
