Leilani - was written by Rev. Joseph Kuni. He was born in Maui, married Alice Saffery of Maui, then moved to Oahu. He built Kealiiokamalu Church in Haleiwa. The song is for his daughter Hannah Leilani Kuni Marks. Leilani was hanai-ed to family in Maui, and when her hanai mother past away, she returned to live with her parents in Wailua. Her father wrote the song for her when she returned.
That's the story I know from my mom, Hannah Leilani Kuni Marks daughter.
Hannah Leilani Kuni was born in 1920, and returned to her parents at around 8 years old.
Rev, Joseph Kuni was ordained at the Hawaiian church in Kalihi, Ka Makua Mau Loa, well attended by Hawaiian musicians in the early 1900s.

This is the great thing about internet forums- people like resh can run a search and find these old threads, then provide such interesting insights into the topic.

Aloha, Kevin.

Thanks for sharing such a wonderful memory. What a blessing. I'd love to hear the song once you finish it.

Terry and I send our best to you and your family.
