Beginning ‘Ukulele with Ron Loo and Pomaika‘i Loo – Kumu Mele
April 24, Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon (Hale Palanakila 104)
Workshop will cover simple chords, strumming techniques, lyrics and pronunciation of “old time” Hawaiian songs. Ron Loo is a respected Kumu Mele, gifted instructor, entertainer, and Slack Key Master who has conducted numerous workshops on ‘ukulele and slack key guitar. He will be assisted by his son Pomaika‘i Loo, also a gifted musician, who has helped his father teach workshops for the past 8 years.

Slack Key Guitar with Ron Loo and Pomaika‘i Loo – Slack Key Masters
April 29, Thursday, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Hale Akoakoa 105)
This workshop will focus on the open G tuning and the chords and lyrics of a traditional song using the tablature method.

Slack Key Guitar with Cyril Pahinui – Slack Key Master
April 30, Friday, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Hale Akoakoa 105)
This workshop will focus on the open C tuning and the lyrics of traditional songs using the chord method. Slack Key Master Cyril’s unique vocal and slack key stylings have earned him two Grammies and several Na Hoku Hanohano awards. His presence in Waikiki and in workshops both on the mainland and locally demonstrate his commitment to carry on the work and legacy of his father, Gabby Pahinui.

Hula ‘Auana with Noenoe Zuttemeister – Kumu Hula
May 8, Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon (Hale Palanakila 225)
Students will learn a mele of the island of Ni‘ihau, and the relationship of the hula motions to the song. Noenoe is a respected Kumu Hula, a lecturer at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, and has served as a judge at numerous hula competitions in Hawaii, on the mainland, and in Japan.

Mele, Kaona, and Inner Meaning with Puakea Nogelmeier – Kumu Mele / Olelo Hawaii
May 13, Thursday, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Hale Akoakoa 107)
This workshop will focus on what makes up mele, how Kaona (hidden meaning) fits into poetry, and how to see and understand the “other” meanings couched in Hawaiian mele. Participants will have an opportunity to look at their favorite mele with a new eye. Dr. Puakea Nogelmeier is an Associate Professor of Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, where he has taught for over 25 years. He is an accomplished and respected author, teacher, composer, and translator.

Fundamentals of Bluegrass Guitar with Kilin Reece – Bluegrass Guitar Master
May 22, Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon (Hale Palanakila 104)
Learn the fundamentals of Bluegrass rhythm and lead guitar styles with an emphasis on ensemble playing. Kilin Reece is a bluegrass Guitar Master originally from Oklahoma. He has an extensive background in theory and is accomplished in both traditional and contemporary bluegrass styles.
