Many thanks for bringing this great story to our attention.
I guess now I'll have to just put up with all the ribbing from my Santa Cruz buds over which is the real "Surf City," Dean Torrance notwithstanding.

Ah, yes! What a dream! "Ten girls for every boy". The closest I came was up at Avila Beach, above San Luis Obispo, back in the '60's, but I was married and loyal at da time. No mattah whea started, brah! Can hang 10 anywheah it's up. |

There ya go, Jack, bragging about yer prowess again..
The line was "two girls for every boy...."
When I was a kid & the song was new, I thought it was about Balboa Island, not Huntington Beach. The girl part, not the surf part...
I do remember seeing -- and trying to lift.. redwood boards. There were a few around Newport still, most folks used them as paddle boards in the 50s and early 60s.
I also remember my mom pointing out Duke Kahanamoku at the Balboa Bay Club when I was a very little kid. Probably one of my earliest memories, now that I think about it--I musta been 3 or 4. He looked like a giant to me & he had a great smile, too.
Mom said he invented surfing in California... not exactly true, but hey, it was mom.
Maybe we can get Bing to chime in with some of his memories. |
