Slack Key for the Mainland Soul – part 1 Instructor: Al Tringali Sun., April 11, 12:15 p.m. - 2:15 p.m., $35 ($60 for both of this instructor’s workshops).
Learn to play the heartwarming Hawaiian guitar sound from an artist who performed professionally in Hawai`i for decades. If you already play some guitar and are familiar with open tunings, this class will help you get comfortable with the Taropatch (open G) tuning, and with techniques to get you in the Island frame of mind. Topics include chords, vamps, strumming and picking styles, and learning songs Hawaiian-style (listen, break it down and play it back).
Slack Key for the Mainland Soul – part 2 Instructor: Al Tringali Sun., April 11, 2:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m., $35 ($60 for both of this instructor’s workshops).
If you’ve got some basic slack key skills (from the first workshop or previous playing), it’s time to step up to a higher level. A professional Hawaiian musician will guide you deeper into the art of Hawaiian ki ho`alu, that gorgeous guitar style that puts everyone into an Island mood. You will focus intensely on one specific song ("Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua"), learning not only its structure, but delving into the poetry, hidden meanings, and history of this mele.
