Aloha Kakou, My name is John Ioane Keanaaina jr. I am originally from Kailua,Kona. I have seen this forum several times before I decided to become a member. I was kinda snooping around to see what it was all about. I found genuine caring individuals who have a passion for Hawaiian culture, music and it's people. I then realized that all of you are the caretakers of this great culture whether you realize it or not. Anyway, I have to thank Aunty Wanda for directing me to this site where I know it will be fun and educational interacting with all of you. I am looking forward to learning some musical skills from all of you. I am a song writer who passionately enjoys writing lyrics and music. I have not performed anywhere but who knows, that may happen. I now reside on Maui where I have raised my children and grand children to nurture this Hawaiian culture of ours. Now, where do I start.........Me ke aloha pumehana

Howzit John
Welcome to "Da Lo'i" Hawaiian!!!!. It's great to have you here to share your mana'o and your music, especially your ki ho'alu which has drawn most of here. I'm sure you will enjoy your visit here and make many new acquaintances and friends. Through this forum I have met many good hearted people some Hawaiian ,some Hawaiian at heart but you would be hard pressed to tell them apart.I have met a lot of folks who share the same passion for ki ho'alu here and many I now consider to be lifelong friends.I hope your stay here will be as fruitful as mine.
Aloha Always

Aloha John!!!! Oh my, Auntie is so happy you came here! I have been showing off your videos since you started posting them on you tube, so I know you have fans over here already. You are a wonderful poet, writing such beautiful mele. It is so good to know that not only will slack key live on in you and your mele, but the lovely Hawaiian language will, as well. And it is wonderful that your grand-daughter is pursuing her own interest in music as well. That's the way to keep the music alive. Even if the young people like their own style of music, they will never forget their roots and will some day cherish those roots.
Like Duke said, we have also have made some wonderful friends here who have become family to us, Duke and Jay included, but oh so many more. So when we come O`ahu in August, you just pop on over and you going see some kanikapila like you never saw and some aloha that always makes this old lady overwhelmed.
Welcome, John. Come wala1au now and then, because everybody here knows, Auntie sure likes to talk story. |

Howzit John,
Welcome to da 'Patch! I've been enjoying your YouTubes--very nahenahe and some great original songs. Also been eyeing those instruments hanging on your wall . What kind of guitar is the F-hole one (2nd from the right)?
Aloha, Doug |

Aloha oukou to all the kalo in the lo'i. You are all so very loko maikai. To answer the question by Doug, that F hole guitar below the four Kumulae ukulele's is a 1925 Gibson L series model. It was my dads guitar he played a lot of jazz stuff on it(every beat, a chord change). on the extreme left is a 1950's Gibson L-GO that was his Kihoalu guitar. He loved Gibson guitars. He also left me his 1935 B series Rickenbacker steel guitar a 1965 Gibson ES 335 and many other amps and instruments that I try to play often. I hang my instrmunts on the wall so I have direct access to them and I can play them often. When they are in a case we don't play them as much. I really enjoy Dukes Kihoalu. He is one of the very best in my opinion. His technical expertise and knowledge is amazing but the thing that brings his Kihoalu together is when he plays, he plays with his heart and soul. When musicians aquire a vast amount of technical knowledge they somtimes become mechanical in their presentations. The ones who can balance this with heart and soul are the very best. Your audience needs to feel your presentation emotionaly. Anyway, on August 6th thru the 8th my ohana is having a family reunion in Kona. it's been 15 years since the last one. on Saturday evening we will have a luau and the entertainment will start from 3:00pm to 11:00pm with entertainment times scheduled every fifteen minutes. I am coordinating the entertainment and to tell you the truth i'm pretty excited. They will come from all over the world. Most are ukulele and guitarists about ten are steel guitarists and the majority entertainment will be Hawaiian music. My nephew is one of the producers on chanel 16 and will be recording the event in DVD format which he will engineer a master DVD which will be available to the ohana for copying at a miniscule fee of $.99 I would like to make my way to Oahu one day and sit in with duke and his ohana for a great kanikapila experience or just to sit and watch. I've seen the videos and everyone is having so much fun. Aloha Auinapo....

Wow Hawaiian !!!I'm flattered by the high praise but it's not warranted. I'm surely not one of of the best,in fact I might not be one of the best of the rest LOL What I really appreciated the most was you pointing out that I try to play from the heart. That my friend is what I aspire to do every time I play ki ho'alu. I detect that in you too my bruddah.
Bruddah John I am envious of you because you not only play the ki ho'alu that make our kupuna smile. You have the creative ability to compose mele for generations to come. One day I hope we get to sit down in a kanikapila circle together and share the ki ho'alu. Or I would also be content just to sit and watch you play Just give me one shout when you stay Honolulu and I guarantee you I go hustle up one kanikapila for jam with you
Eh John although most my family stay on the Hamakua Coast up Big Island they originally from Kona side. Maybe somewhere down the line we could be related........maybe only calabash kind soooo.......seeing that we practically family.......maybe I can get that 99cent DVD you was talking about, yeah? Can try,eh?

Aloha John, welcome to da TP. We've been enjoying your music and happy that you're sharing it with the world. I have to agree with you about Duke, he is one Hawaiian dat plays from the heart. I have the honor of getting to jam with him often (in fact, we've put a band together with a couple other TP'rs) and we just sit and enjoy the music. Aloha again and hope to hear more from you.
