Aunty Kalena Gregory’s halau, Hui Hula o na Pu’u i ka Noe, is having a luau/concert next Sunday, May 2, 2010, 2:00-5:00P, at Piedmont Veterans Hall, 401 Highland Ave., Piedmont, CA (near Oakland): http://www.huihula.com/luauprint.pdf .
Taropatch’s own Patrick Landeza is headlining the event, and I’m sure he’ll be playing songs from his wonderful new album. Also performing will be Haopinaka, which includes my buddies and fellow Taropatchers Sil da Trill and rodv18, and hula dancing by the halau.
Tickets are $30.00/adult and $15.00 for kids 3-10 yrs. (under 3 free). Luau proceeds will help fund the halau’s upcoming trip to a Texas hula competition. See the above flyer for info on how to order tickets, but ORDER SOON because the luau is right around the corner. In addition, the halau has a lumpia fundraiser (cool idea), http://www.huihula.com/ .
This is an excellent fundraising event with ono food, terrific entertainment, and at a very reasonable price. Hope to see you there!
Aloha, Doug

I just received a note from Aunty Kalena and they need to get headcounts and entree choices (salmon or kalua pig) so they can order supplies and begin preparing.
Therefore, if you're interested in attending the luau/concert, please contact Aunty Kalena as soon as possible via the contact info on the flyer: http://www.huihula.com/luauprint.pdf

Eh Patrick,
I am sure enjoying your new CD! How about some liner notes? I am keenly interested in your musicians.
So how about that Jeff Au Hoy? Can he sing? That was such a fantastic show you put on at Don Quixote's, very memorable. The only things missing were the cocopalms swaying in the wind, the crashing surf, and I would have been on one of those lovely island beaches....

Just a quick note to say that the luau was very nice and a lot of fun. The auditorium was quite full, and Patrick’s food of course was ono. I wished I could have had a combo plate (kalua pig and grilled salmon), but we had to choose one entrée only.
Bruddah’s Sil, Rod and Peter of Haopinaka did a great job providing the pre-dinner music as well as backing up the halau during the show. They easily played for 2-1/2+ hours—Aunty Kalena sure got her money’s worth out of those buggahs! As part of the package, Haopinaka threw in Taropatcher GUke to do the sound for the price of a meal. (However, after seeing how much food was piled on Genaro’s plate, I think Aunty Kalena lost out on that deal!)
Right after dinner some local looking Filipino/Hawaiian guy in the crowd came on stage to tell some impromptu jokes. He was pretty funny. I think his name was Andy. His delivery was so good, he could probably do a stand-up comedy act. I think his last name started with a “B” . . . something like Bumatai—yeah that’s it, Andy Bumatai.
After cleaning up a little (a lot?) and changing from his Chef’s whites to an aloha shirt, Patrick came on and played a very nice set, including songs from his new album. He was backed up by the multi-talented Kit Madrid on bass. Haopinaka then returned with Aunty Kalena and the halau, and they had a very enjoyable one hour performance to conclude the evening. The keiki hulas were particularly cute and brought back memories of the annual May Day performances we used to do at school small-kid time in Hawaii.
All in all, it was a very fun night and for a very good cause (fundraising for the halau’s upcoming competition in Texas). Mahalo to Aunty Kalena and the halau, Patrick and Kit, Haopinaka and Genaro, and the many volunteers for putting on a great event. Also mahalo to those Taropatchers who responded to this post and came by to support the halau.
Aloha, Doug
